There isn’t an Amazon-verified list of six Kindle features that are disabled by default for every owner. Sync, for example, is on by default, and settings vary by e-reader, app, model, and book format. Instead, review these six options and turn on the ones that suit your reading habits or accessibility needs.
1. Adjust text display on a Kindle e-reader
While a book is open, tap the top of the screen and open the Aa or page-display menu. Depending on your Kindle model, you may find controls for font, text size, boldness, spacing, margins, orientation, alignment, background, themes, and reading progress. Amazon notes that available controls can vary by model, and display preferences may carry across books. Choose settings that make reading comfortable rather than treating one combination as best for everyone. Amazon’s text-display guide describes the available options.

2. Check Sync if you read on more than one device
Sync keeps reading position, notes, and highlights available across linked Kindle e-readers and apps when they have an internet connection. Amazon says Sync is enabled by default, so it is a setting to verify—not a feature every owner needs to turn on. If you disable it, cross-device continuity and some note, highlight, or sharing and export functions may be affected; notes made while Sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on. Review the trade-offs in Amazon’s Sync settings guidance before changing it.
3. Consider VoiceView on a compatible e-reader
VoiceView is Kindle e-reader screen-reader support for spoken menus and reading assistance. It is an accessibility feature, not a universal productivity upgrade. Check Amazon’s Kindle e-reader accessibility information for your device and audio setup. Amazon’s 2026 Kindle setup guide also covers setup information; availability and steps depend on the device.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
4. Try Assistive Reader and text highlighting in the Kindle app
Kindle reading apps include accessibility options such as Assistive Reader and real-time text highlighting. These are app features, not controls that should be assumed to exist on every Kindle e-reader. Check Amazon’s accessible reading options for Kindle apps for supported platforms and setup details.
5. Use Reading Ruler if visual guidance helps
The Kindle app’s colored Reading Ruler can provide a visual guide across text. It is optional and app-specific; the cited Amazon app guidance does not establish it as a feature on every e-reader or across every app platform. Look for it in the accessibility options for the app you use, and leave it off if it does not improve your reading.

6. Check Word Wise availability before relying on it
Word Wise can display inline definitions and synonyms, which may help with unfamiliar vocabulary. Amazon’s cited app guidance identifies it for Android, but does not establish that it is available on every device or book. Check whether the option appears for your Android app and the title you are reading before expecting it to work.
Why a setting may not work in a particular book
Kindle controls depend partly on book format. Fixed-layout and Print Replica titles can have different limits from reflowable books, including restrictions on text resizing or screen-reader support. If a display or accessibility option is unavailable, try a supported reflowable title before assuming the device is malfunctioning. Kindle Direct Publishing’s format comparison explains differences between formats.
