A trading bot can enforce its risk rule exactly as coded and still leave a dangerous gap: the rule may count open positions while ignoring pending orders, or measure a “daily” loss from the moment the process started rather than from the start of a day. In an account of an unnamed MetaTrader expert advisor, developer Valerii Sakara described both problems, plus a halt that left resting orders able to fill. The account was based on static code review, not a reported live or simulated test. The lesson is practical: define what state a guard must cover, when its limits reset, and what happens to exposure already in the market when a limit trips.
How pending orders can bypass a one-trade guard
Sakara’s account describes entry logic that returned when it found an open position. But the bot placed sell-limit orders, which remain pending orders until filled; they are not open positions. The code review reportedly found no call that counted resting orders. That left a gap between what the guard checked and what could still create exposure.

The only other throttle described was a cooldown of about one minute, while the bot was used on a one-minute chart. Repeated signals could therefore add pending orders before the first one filled. Each order was sized to the documented per-trade cap, but separate orders were sized independently. If several filled, total simultaneous exposure could exceed that single-trade cap. Inventory every state that can create exposure
A guard should not assume that “no open position” means “no active risk.” Review the complete set of states that can lead to a trade:

- Open positions.
- Pending or resting orders that have not filled.
- Orders submitted but not yet acknowledged or reflected in the position list.
- Partial fills, where a remaining order quantity can still execute.
For a one-trade-at-a-time rule, the condition should account for the relevant positions and orders—not just the easiest collection to query. The exact implementation depends on the platform and order lifecycle; the key is to make the counted population explicit.
Does a daily loss limit reset at midnight?
Not necessarily. The reported loss guard compared a starting balance with the current balance, but its starting balance was captured when the bot launched and was not reset at a day boundary. In that design, the limit measured losses since startup, not losses for the current day. Once tripped, it reportedly stayed off until a manual restart.

“Daily” therefore needs a defined clock and reset policy. Process launch, server-day rollover, and a manual reset are separate events; a guard must say which one establishes the baseline. A server-day rule also needs a clear definition of the server’s day boundary rather than an assumed local midnight.

Blocking new entries does not remove orders already resting with the broker. In the account, the original guard reportedly stopped new orders but did not cancel pending ones, so an order could fill after the bot was considered halted. The reported proposed change cancels resting orders when the loss limit trips.

A complete trip policy should specify both the immediate action and the condition for resuming. For example, it can block new orders and cancel outstanding orders, then remain inactive until the defined reset event occurs. Whether a system should also close open positions is a separate risk-policy choice; the account does not establish that the reported change did so.
What change was reported, and what is not established?
Sakara reported that the maintainer confirmed both issues publicly and opened a pull request about seven weeks after the issue was filed. The reported change allowed one resting sell-limit order at a time, added configurable expiry for an unfilled order with a 30-minute default, reset the daily starting balance on server-day rollover, and cancelled resting orders when the daily loss limit tripped. The 30-minute figure is a reported default for that proposed change, not a general recommendation.

Review the guard’s scope as well as its condition: a correct predicate applied only to positions cannot protect orders outside that list. Then test state transitions that could expose the gap. These are recommended checks, not tests reported as performed on the MetaTrader bot.

- Repeat an entry signal before the first order fills. Confirm that the second signal is blocked when a qualifying pending order already exists.
- Carry the process across the defined day boundary. Check that the daily baseline changes at the intended boundary, independent of when the process started.
- Trip the loss limit while an order is resting. Confirm that the configured action reaches existing orders, not only future entries.
- Check order lifecycle cases. Include partial fills, cancelled or rejected orders, and orders in flight so the guard’s count stays aligned with actual exposure.
- Use known-good and known-bad cases. Verify that the guard accepts a permitted state and rejects a state that should breach the rule; include negative controls so unrelated conditions do not trigger it.
For each test, record the expected state, the observed count, and whether the bot blocks, cancels, or resumes as policy requires. That makes the guard’s actual coverage observable instead of relying on the name of the rule.
