The TP-Link Tapo Doorbell Pro D260’s headline cost advantage is that its listed motion and AI detection features and local video recording do not require a Tapo Care subscription. You do need to buy a microSD card separately, and cloud video history is an optional paid service. TP-Link lists a US MSRP of $219.99; check current pricing and availability because the launch coupon dates shown on its page have passed.

What the D260 offers

The D260 is a video doorbell designed to work either on its rechargeable battery or with hardwired power. TP-Link lists 4K maximum video resolution, a maximum frame rate of 15 fps and a 180-degree diagonal field of view. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of footage quality or alert performance. See the TP-Link D260 product page and product datasheet.

Other listed video features include HDR, 3D noise reduction, lens distortion correction, infrared night vision rated to 30 feet (10 meters), and full-color night vision with built-in lights. The doorbell also has a microphone and speaker for two-way audio with noise cancellation. TP-Link lists phone-call notifications when someone presses the button, quick responses and voice masking.

What works without a subscription?

TP-Link says the D260 can record to a microSD card without Tapo Care. Its local-storage specification supports cards up to 512 GB, but the card is sold separately. That means recording does not require a recurring cloud plan, though local storage is not an included accessory or a zero-cost setup.

Tapo 4K Wired or Battery Powered Smart Video Doorbell Pro, D260
  • SEE NEARLY EVERY INCH OF YOUR DOORWAY: Complete front door monitoring in sharp 4K. Radar detection and AI recognition reduce false notifications, while 24/7 recording** helps you capture every moment. No subscription required.
  • 4K CLARITY WITH 180° DFOV: See visitors, activity, and more in sharp 4K detail, with 4x the resolution of standard 1080p. The ultra-wide diagonal field of view extends close to your door for a clearer view of packages.
  • PRECISE MOTION DETECTION: Dual motion sensors and radar detection help reduce false alerts from branches, shadows, and other movement. An aerial view shows whether visitors approached your door or just passed by.
  • FREE AI DETECTION FOR PEOPLE, PETS, VEHICLES & PACKAGES: Customize alerts for the activity that matters most to you. No subscription required. For best performance, keep firmware updated by checking the Tapo app. (Facial Recognition is not available in Illinois and Texas.)
  • FLEXIBLE WIRE-FREE OR HARDWIRED INSTALLATION: Install wire-free with a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 180 days◇, or hardwire** for 24/7 recording and pre-roll footage. No professional help required.

Tapo Care is optional and subscription-based. TP-Link lists up to 30 days of cloud video history with the service. The choice is between buying a compatible card for local recordings and paying for cloud history; the product page does not establish current subscription prices.

Detection, recognition and privacy

TP-Link lists motion, person, animal, vehicle and package detection, plus activity zones. Its product copy says those AI detection tags come “at no extra cost”; this describes the manufacturer’s feature policy, not independently verified accuracy. Facial recognition is also listed. TP-Link says facial profiles are processed on the doorbell by default and that recognition can be turned off. The US product page says facial recognition is unavailable in Illinois and Texas.

Battery or hardwired: choose based on how you want it to record

Battery operation

Battery installation avoids wiring, but runtime depends on use. TP-Link estimates up to 180 days with 300 seconds of daily use in its laboratory test, and 140 days at 360 seconds per day. These are manufacturer estimates, not a promise of typical household battery life; TP-Link says actual life may vary. See its power and installation information.

Hardwired operation

TP-Link says hardwiring is required for 24/7 continuous recording and pre-roll. Its installation note also says a traditional existing chime must be bypassed for this mode. Buyers should account for that wiring and chime change rather than assuming continuous capture is available in the battery setup.
