To use Android Motion Assist, open Settings > profile icon > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist, then enable Start in a moving vehicle. Add its Quick Settings tile as a manual backup in case your phone does not detect the ride. Google specifies Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play Services; availability can still vary by device. Motion Assist is intended for passengers, and it may not help everyone.
What Motion Assist does
Motion Assist displays small bubbles along the edges of the screen. They move in response to motion detected by the phone, such as turns, acceleration and braking. Google’s stated aim is to help synchronize visual information with what the body feels so passengers can use a phone more comfortably while travelling. That is the feature’s intended rationale, not proof of clinical effectiveness.

Google describes it as an option for reading, browsing or watching on a phone as a passenger. Its feature page says “Results vary”; the overlay is not guaranteed to ease symptoms and may make some users feel worse. Google does not publish a measured success rate or clinical efficacy statistic for Motion Assist.

Check requirements and find Motion Assist
Google specifies a phone running Android 17 or higher with Google Play Services updated. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee the setting is available on every device.

- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap All services.
- Under Personal & device safety, tap Motion assist.
If you do not see the option, search for “Motion assist” at the top of Settings. If it still does not appear, the feature may not be available on your device.
Turn on automatic activation
On the Motion assist settings page, switch on Start in a moving vehicle. The phone will try to detect when you are in a moving vehicle and start Motion Assist automatically. Google notes that detection may not always work, so a manual tile is a useful fallback.

Add a Quick Settings tile for manual control
On the Motion assist settings page, tap Add tile to Quick Settings, then choose Small tile or Large tile. You can also add it through the Quick Settings edit menu. To access Quick Settings, swipe down from the top of the screen; tap the Motion Assist tile to control the feature manually.
If automatic activation starts a session, Android displays a silent notification. Tap that notification to turn Motion Assist off for that session.

Customize the bubbles
Go to Settings > profile icon > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist, then tap Customize. The settings page shows a live preview as you adjust the appearance.
- Opacity: Make the bubbles darker or more transparent.
- Color Theme: Choose from available colors, including red, yellow, green or blue.
- Shape: Choose a bubble shape.
- Randomization: Turn changes to bubble color and shape every few seconds on or off.
Use Motion Assist safely
Use the feature only as a passenger. Google states: “Motion assist should not be used while operating a moving vehicle or in other situations requiring full attention to safety.” If the bubbles cause discomfort or make your symptoms worse, stop using them. Motion Assist is not a guaranteed remedy or a treatment for a medical condition.
