An appliance warranty covers only the parts, failures, remedies and time period stated in the written terms for that specific model. A separately sold “extended warranty” is usually a paid service contract with its own exclusions, fees and claims process—not automatically a continuation of the manufacturer’s warranty. Consider buying one only if it adds useful coverage at a cost and under terms you can accept.
What does an appliance warranty cover?
The Federal Trade Commission defines a written warranty as “a promise from a manufacturer or seller to stand behind a product.” For an appliance, the actual promise is in the warranty document for that model; a retailer’s general description is not a substitute. Coverage can vary substantially between products.

Read the terms for four essentials: what parts and repairs are covered, what remedy the company offers, how long coverage lasts, and what conditions apply. The remedy may be repair, replacement or a refund, as specified in the warranty. Terms may also address maintenance, use, registration, labor or shipping. The FTC advises assuming a repair or part is not covered if it is not listed as covered. Keep the warranty and purchase receipt; the receipt helps establish when you bought the appliance and that you own it. See the FTC’s warranty guidance.

What does an extended warranty cover?
A separately sold extended warranty or service contract costs extra and has its own terms. It may cover repairs or components differently from the included warranty, add coverage after that warranty ends, or duplicate protection you already have. The phrase “extended warranty” alone does not tell you what is covered or who is responsible: the provider may not be the manufacturer. Identify the company backing the plan and read the contract before paying. The FTC explains the distinction in its guide to extended warranties and service contracts.
#1 Best Overall
- The original electronics toolkit: Designed for computer, smartphone, tablet, and gaming repair, backed by thousands of free instructions.
- Intentional selection: All the tools you need. A 64 precision bit driver set, tweezers, flex extension, opening tools, and anti-static wristband.
- Secure design: Magnetic case and foam insert ensure secure storage and transportation. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting/organization tray.
- Lifetime Warranty: We'll replace anything that breaks, as long as you own it.
Do not assume a plan covers every breakdown, accidental damage, or every appliance component. The contract’s listed coverage, exclusions, limits and claim conditions determine what the provider promises.
What does an appliance warranty or service contract not cover?
There is no universal list of exclusions for all appliances or plans. A particular warranty may omit a part or repair, and a service contract may restrict coverage to specified components or types of failure. The contract may also impose use or maintenance conditions, fees, reimbursement limits, or a required repair route. If the document does not say an issue is covered, do not count on coverage for it.

How to compare an appliance service contract
Before buying, compare the plan with the appliance’s included warranty and the option of paying for a repair yourself. Use the contract, not a sales summary, to check:

- Added coverage: Which parts and failure types does the plan cover beyond the included warranty? Does it include accidental damage, if that matters to you?
- Duration and price: What is the total price and how long does coverage last? Work out the cost per year or month, and check when the plan begins.
- Out-of-pocket costs and limits: Look for deductibles, service-call fees, shipping costs, transfer fees and reimbursement caps.
- Conditions and exclusions: Check required maintenance and use conditions, as well as stated exclusions that could affect a claim.
- Claims and repairs: Find out who receives and handles claims, who performs repairs, and whether the appliance must go to a particular seller or repair center. A difficult or slow claims process can reduce the plan’s practical value.
- Provider: Identify the company responsible for the contract. Check its track record, reviews and complaints to your state consumer protection office.
The FTC recommends checking these factors before purchasing. Its guidance does not set a universal break-even price or predict whether a particular appliance will need repairs. You can also set aside the amount the plan would cost and use those savings toward a repair if one is needed; that is an alternative, not a guarantee that saving will cost less for every household.
Is an extended warranty worth it?
It depends on the actual added coverage, the contract’s cost and claim terms, and your ability and willingness to handle a repair bill. A plan merits consideration when it fills a meaningful gap beyond the included warranty, covers failures you are concerned about, and has acceptable fees, limits, provider and repair process. It may be poor value if it mostly duplicates existing coverage, excludes the failures you care about, or makes claims costly or difficult.

Consumer Reports’ extended-warranty buying guide reports a historical finding from its 2015 Repair and Replace Appliance Survey: 23% of respondents whose appliances were repaired under an extended warranty said it took more than one try to get the repair right, compared with 15% of respondents who paid for a repair themselves. This is a survey result from 2015, not a current prediction for every appliance or provider, and it does not establish a current universal cost comparison.
Can using an independent repairer void an appliance warranty?
FTC guidance says federal law generally prevents manufacturers from requiring consumers to use specifically branded parts or services to keep warranty coverage, unless those parts or services are provided for free or the FTC has granted a waiver. That does not mean every later repair-related claim must be covered. A denial based solely on using an independent repairer is different from a claim that the repair caused the damage at issue; the written terms and facts matter. State law can affect implied warranties, so this general U.S. guidance does not resolve state-specific rights. The FTC’s Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act resource provides background and official links.
