Consumer Reports bases its reliability history on subscriber questionnaires covering 17 potential trouble spots, and warns that some older or less popular years may have too few responses for statistically confident estimates. Complaint totals answer a different question. They reflect reports submitted to a database, not the share of vehicles that failed; exposure and owners’ likelihood of reporting can affect the count. Recalls are different again: their number alone does not establish how dependable a vehicle is. Because the sources do not provide a common dataset for comparing every Sequoia year, combining their results into one ranked top five would be misleading.

How to choose a specific Sequoia
- Use year lists only to narrow the search. Complaint compilations can help identify candidates, but they cannot establish that one example is dependable or that an unlisted year is a poor choice.

- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the specific SUV before purchase. A year-level list cannot substitute for an inspection of that vehicle.
A practical way to weigh the shortlist
- Give more weight to complete records and a satisfactory independent inspection than to a year’s position in a complaint list.
- Treat survey ratings, complaint counts, and recall records as separate evidence, not interchangeable scores.
- Do not interpret missing survey data or a low complaint total as proof that a model year is problem-free.
- Compare the actual condition and documentation of the vehicles available to you rather than forcing a single “best year” answer from incompatible rankings.
