Node.js Structured Output: Validate Schemas and Handle 429 Errors

A practical OpenAI-specific pattern for parsing schema-constrained output in Node.js and handling temporary 429 errors without uncontrolled retries.

In Node.js, validate OpenAI structured output by defining a supported schema, parsing with the official SDK’s responses.parse() helper, and checking response.output_parsed before using the result. For a temporary 429, avoid immediate or unlimited retries: respect a valid Retry-After delay as a minimum, add jitter, and cap attempts and total wait time. The examples below are specific to OpenAI’s API and JavaScript SDK, not a universal rule for every LLM provider.

Define a schema the API can enforce

Structured Outputs can reduce format mismatches, but the API supports a subset of JSON Schema. For strict mode, the root schema must be an object and every property must be required. If a value may be absent, represent that possibility as a required nullable field rather than an optional property. Unsupported schema features can cause an error.

Parse the response with the official Node.js SDK

The official SDK documents client.responses.parse() together with zodTextFormat(). A minimal pattern is:

import OpenAI from "openai";
import { z } from "zod";
import { zodTextFormat } from "openai/helpers/zod";

const client = new OpenAI();
const ResultSchema = z.object({
  answer: z.string(),
  confidence: z.number().nullable(),
});

const response = await client.responses.parse({
  model: "YOUR_SUPPORTED_MODEL",
  input: "Extract the answer and confidence from the provided text.",
  text: {
    format: zodTextFormat(ResultSchema, "result"),
  },
});

const result = response.output_parsed;
if (result === null) {
  throw new Error("No parsed structured output was available");
}

// Use result only after your application-specific checks.

Replace the model value with a model supported by your account and the requested task. The SDK documents output_parsed as the first successfully parsed text output, or null when no parsed output is available. A successful HTTP exchange alone therefore does not prove that the application has usable structured data. See the official OpenAI Node.js SDK documentation for the helper and response shape.

Handle missing, refused, or incomplete output

Branch on the parsed value before passing it into downstream code. If it is null, inspect the response status and any incomplete details available in the response, then handle refusal or incomplete output as a separate outcome. Schema constraints improve format reliability; they do not guarantee that every response will contain a parsed object.

  • Use the parsed result only when it exists and satisfies your application’s own requirements.
  • Handle refusal and incomplete outcomes explicitly instead of treating them as ordinary schema-validation failures.
  • Keep application checks for business rules that the response schema does not express.

OpenAI’s guidance on structured output and refusals is in its Structured Outputs documentation.

Classify the 429 before retrying

A 429 response can reflect different kinds of rate-limit pressure, including token-rate pressure. Retrying without diagnosing the cause can extend the failure and add more demand. Check the error details and relevant response headers; also consider whether long prompts or an oversized output allowance are contributing. OpenAI explains rate-limit errors and mitigation in its rate limits guide.

Do not assume a single fixed request-per-minute limit applies: no general numeric threshold is established here. Limits depend on the applicable account and model conditions, so use the response and account-specific information to identify the constraint.

Retry temporary 429s with bounded backoff

For a retryable 429, wait rather than looping immediately. If the response includes a valid Retry-After value, treat that delay as a minimum, then add a small random jitter. If the header is absent or invalid, use exponential backoff with jitter. Set both a maximum retry count and a maximum total elapsed retry time; retries are not guaranteed to succeed, and failed retries can still count against per-minute limits.

  1. Classify the error and determine whether retrying is appropriate.
  2. Read and validate Retry-After. When valid, wait at least that long and add jitter.
  3. Without a valid header, calculate an exponentially increasing delay and add jitter.
  4. Before each retry, stop if the attempt limit or total time budget has been reached.
  5. If the retry budget is exhausted, return or surface the error so the caller can recover rather than retrying indefinitely.

OpenAI’s rate limits guide discusses backoff and retry behavior. Do not hard-code a rate-limit number without checking the applicable account and model information.

Account for retries already performed by the SDK

The official SDK retries eligible errors by default, but the exact behavior—including delay handling—can vary with the installed SDK version and its settings. An application-level retry loop can therefore multiply the total attempts if it is layered on top without accounting for SDK retries. Check the retry configuration for the version you have installed, then decide whether the SDK or your application owns the retry policy. The OpenAI Node.js SDK repository documents SDK configuration and behavior.

Practical checklist

  • Keep the strict schema within the supported JSON Schema subset; use an object root and required properties.
  • Represent a potentially absent value as required and nullable where appropriate.
  • Check response.output_parsed and handle null, refusal, and incomplete outcomes.
  • Diagnose the 429 cause before retrying; reduce avoidable token pressure where relevant.
  • Honor a valid Retry-After as a minimum, add jitter, and bound attempts and elapsed time.
  • Verify installed SDK retry settings so application retries do not accidentally stack.
