If Venmo is not working, first identify whether the problem is the app, signing in, or a payment. Check your connection and device, refresh the app session, and—if a payment or transfer may have gone through—check your Venmo transaction history before trying again. These steps help avoid duplicate payments and distinguish an app error from a declined transaction.
Start by identifying what is failing
Different symptoms call for different next steps. An app that will not load is not the same problem as a rejected card or an account you cannot access.

- App or general error: Check the device and connection, then refresh or reinstall the app.
- Sign-in problem: Use the credentials for your existing account and the password-reset option if needed.
- Payment or bank-transfer failure: Check transaction history before attempting the same transaction again.
Fix general app errors
Venmo’s Common Error Messages guidance recommends checking connectivity and device resources, refreshing the session, and updating the app and device software.
- Check internet access. Confirm that your device can connect using Wi-Fi or mobile data. If you use a VPN, turn it off temporarily and try again.
- Check available storage and memory. Close unnecessary apps or free storage if the device is short on resources, then reopen Venmo.
- Sign out and back in. If the app opens but is behaving unexpectedly, refresh the session by signing out and signing back in.
- Reinstall Venmo. If the problem continues, delete the app and reinstall it. Venmo says reinstalling does not affect your account and ensures you have the latest app version.
- Check operating-system compatibility. The cited Venmo help page lists Apple iOS 14 or Android Lollipop (API 26) or higher. Requirements can change, so check the live page if your device is older.
If a payment or transfer produced an error
A general error does not always mean the transaction failed. Venmo says a “Bad state” error can occur when it is or was experiencing technical issues. Before submitting the payment or bank transfer again, open transaction history in the app and see whether it is recorded as successful. If it failed, Venmo recommends trying again later.

This check matters whenever the app displayed an error after you initiated a transaction: submitting it again without checking could duplicate a payment that actually completed.
If Venmo declined your payment
A declined payment is not necessarily an app malfunction. Venmo says a payment may be declined by the bank or card issuer, or flagged by Venmo’s automated security systems. Follow the specific error message shown in the app. If it points to your bank or card, contact the issuer; depending on the cause, using another payment method or trying later may help. For an error after an attempted payment, check transaction history before retrying.

If you cannot sign in
Use the email address, phone number, or username associated with your existing Venmo account and its password. If you cannot remember the password, use the password-reset option rather than opening another account. Venmo says users are allowed only one personal account, and creating another can cause payment-method problems. Venmo also says sign-in is available only from the U.S.; if you are outside the country, that restriction may explain why access is failing.
When to contact Venmo
If the app still fails after the relevant steps above, use Venmo’s official Contact Us page to find the available support route. Venmo lists in-app messaging and general phone support, but the messaging hours shown on its official pages differ. Check the live Contact Us page for current hours and the appropriate option rather than relying on an old schedule.

How to check whether Venmo is down
The steps here do not establish whether Venmo is experiencing an outage right now. If the same error persists across a working connection and a refreshed app session, check Venmo’s current official notices or contact support before repeatedly attempting a payment. Always use transaction history to verify an attempted payment or transfer before resubmitting it.
