Touch Grass is presented by its builder, Arjav Patni, as an offline route planner for cycling, running, hiking, and walking that uses a locally run Gemma model. The privacy-first premise is that you can plan without sending your exact starting coordinates to a third-party cloud service. Those are the project’s stated design claims, not independently verified capabilities.
What Touch Grass is designed to do
Patni describes Touch Grass as a way for outdoor enthusiasts to explore their neighborhoods without broadcasting their starting location. The project is aimed at cyclists, runners, hikers, and casual walkers. Its project description, published October 6, 2025, is available on DEV Community.

The description does not establish that the application has been independently tested or that its offline and privacy behavior has been audited. Treat those points as the builder’s stated goals rather than verified product guarantees.
How the reported local AI setup works
According to Patni, the application combines a Python FastAPI backend with a Next.js frontend built using TypeScript and Tailwind CSS. The reported setup runs Gemma 2B locally on macOS through Ollama.
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
The builder says Python handles pacing calculations and kilometer markers, then gives Gemma a structured template to fill. This describes a division of work in the reported architecture: Python performs the stated calculations, while the local model contributes to generating route-related output. The submission does not provide model or framework version numbers, hardware requirements, or independent implementation measurements.
What offline and privacy-first mean here
The project’s premise is to avoid sending exact starting coordinates to a third-party cloud server. Running a model locally can support that aim, but it does not by itself establish how every part of an application handles location or network traffic. The project description does not include a data-flow audit.
Rank #2
- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
It also leaves important offline details unanswered: it does not identify the map, trail, or road data used to create route geometry, explain whether that data is stored on the device, or document whether route calculation works with the network disabled. As a result, the description alone cannot confirm that a user can generate a complete, usable route without internet access.

- Described audience: Cyclists, runners, hikers, casual walkers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
- Reported software: FastAPI, a Next.js frontend, and Gemma 2B running locally through Ollama on macOS.
- Reported interface elements: A mobile-first, high-contrast design, a preparation checklist, and a timeline-based navigation view.
- Not established: Map or trail-data sources, route geometry methods, fully offline route generation, end-to-end location handling, supported devices, minimum hardware, or field-test results.
Patni’s project submission is the source for these descriptions; it supplies no published statistics or usability measurements. A Mac capable of running Ollama and a local Gemma model is a possible prerequisite based on the reported setup, but the description does not identify compatible models or a minimum specification.
