Research suggests game mechanics can support physical activity for some people, and outdoor activity in green settings may benefit some psychological outcomes. Neither finding proves that this particular interface will get you outside, improve your mood, or make nature more appealing.
What is SOLAR QUEST: Overcharge?
Imagine opening a mobile HUD before a walk and seeing a simple mission: choose an accessible route, collect progress points as you move, and finish when you reach a safe stopping point. Missions, streaks, XP and arcade visuals are possible design choices—not tested ingredients with established health effects.

The useful idea is to make the walk feel purposeful without making the screen the main event. A smartphone is a plausible way to display a GPS-enabled game interface, but no specific phone, wearable or accessory has been shown necessary for this concept.
Can gamification make walking more fun?
Evidence supports a cautious “it can help” rather than a guarantee. A 2016 systematic review identified 19 papers reporting empirical effects of gamification on health and wellbeing: 59% reported positive effects and 41% mixed effects. The authors described a small evidence base, often moderate-or-lower evidence quality, and limitations such as a lack of comparisons with non-gamified versions. They concluded, “The current state of evidence supports that gamification can have a positive impact in health and wellbeing, particularly for health behaviours.” Johnson et al., 2016

A 2022 meta-analysis of 16 randomized studies involving 2,407 participants found a small-to-medium average effect on physical activity after sensitivity analyses. The estimated effect was larger when gamified activity was compared with inactive controls than when it was compared with active controls. That difference matters: a game may look more effective when the alternative is doing nothing than when it is compared with another activity option. The findings concern gamification overall, not a cyberpunk HUD or any one reward system. Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2022
Does walking in nature help your mood?
A 2022 systematic review examined experimental studies comparing physical activity in outdoor green natural settings with activity in outdoor urban settings among adults. Twenty-four studies met its inclusion criteria, with nine included in the meta-analysis. The review found that several psychological outcomes favored green natural settings, but also reported high risk of bias and substantial heterogeneity. The results suggest possible benefits; they do not establish nature exposure as a treatment or promise an individual mood improvement. Wicks et al., 2022

A separate randomized crossover study involving 59 healthy adult office workers found that 20-minute walks in a blue-space environment improved immediate self-reported wellbeing and mood compared with an urban walk or resting. Measured cardiovascular outcomes did not show significant post-walk differences between the blue and urban environments. This is a specific study of short walks and healthy office workers, not proof that every outdoor walk produces the same result. Environmental Research, 2020
Will game rewards make people choose nature routes?
Not necessarily. In a 2024 field experiment, researchers created 13 routes in urban and nature landscapes and surveyed 67 Pokémon GO players. Urban routes were more popular overall in that particular setting. Route proximity and in-game rewards also shaped popularity, suggesting that convenience and placement can compete with scenery. The result does not predict how SOLAR QUEST would perform, but it is a useful design warning: adding points to a nature route does not guarantee that people will choose it. Laato et al., 2024

How could a walking HUD work without getting in the way?
Keep the real-world task simple and let the interface support it before and after the walk, rather than demand attention during it.
- Choose a safe, accessible route. Prefer a path you can walk comfortably and that suits your surroundings and abilities.
- Set one clear mission. A short walk or reaching a chosen waypoint is easier to understand than a complicated chain of objectives.
- Make progress easy to check. XP, streaks or a completion screen could provide feedback, but none is established as superior by the cited studies.
- Put the phone away while moving. Do not look at a screen while crossing streets or walking somewhere unsafe. Check the HUD only when stopped in a safe place.
- Let the walk count without a perfect score. A missed streak or unfinished mission should not turn an ordinary walk into a failure.
These are prudent design choices, not a clinically tested SOLAR QUEST protocol. The cited evidence does not compare cyberpunk visuals, color palettes or particular reward-loop designs.

What the concept can—and cannot—claim
- Reasonable: Gamification may make physical activity more engaging, and research suggests it can support activity on average.
- Reasonable with qualification: Some studies and a systematic review found psychological outcomes favoring natural or blue-space settings, while noting important evidence limitations.
- Not established: That a cyberpunk HUD will reliably increase anyone’s walking, direct people to nature, or improve their health or mood.
- Not established: That sunlight is required. The evidence summarized here concerns gamification and outdoor settings; it does not test sunlight as a necessary ingredient.
