Adding a compatible 16GB RAM module to an existing 8GB module gives you 24GB of nominal installed memory if your computer supports and recognizes both. It does not necessarily make all 24GB run in dual-channel mode: on supported Intel DDR4/DDR5 systems, unequal capacities can be split between a dual-channel region and a single-channel region. Compatibility, slot placement, and the computer’s memory limits determine what happens in your system.
What changes when you add 16GB to 8GB?
The capacity calculation is straightforward: 8GB + 16GB = 24GB. That figure describes nominal installed capacity, not a guaranteed performance gain. Your computer must support the memory generation, module type, capacity, and configuration, and it must expose the full capacity for the upgrade to work as expected. Intel recommends checking the computer or motherboard documentation and processor specifications before buying RAM (Intel’s RAM selection guide).

Capacity and channel operation are separate. On applicable Intel DDR4/DDR5 platforms, Flex Memory can use the portion of each channel with matching capacity in symmetric dual-channel mode, while excess capacity on the larger channel operates in single-channel mode. With 8GB in one channel and 16GB in the other, the conceptual arrangement is 16GB in the symmetric region and 8GB in the asymmetric region. This depends on platform support and correct module placement; it is not a universal rule for every computer. Intel describes the arrangement in its 13th Generation Core processor datasheet.

It may help if your current workload is running short of available memory. Intel says more RAM can improve responsiveness and may help game frame rates, but the effect depends on the workload and existing memory pressure (Intel’s guidance). If your usual tasks were not memory-limited, adding capacity may make little noticeable difference.

There is no universal performance percentage or guaranteed frame-rate increase for moving from 8GB to 24GB in the sources cited here. Intel’s datasheet states that “Dual-Channel Symmetric mode, also known as interleaved mode, provides maximum performance on real world applications.” That statement describes the benefit of symmetric operation; it does not quantify the outcome of this particular upgrade.
Check compatibility before buying
Do not choose a module based only on its 16GB capacity. Check the exact computer or motherboard manual and processor memory specifications for:

- Memory generation: DDR generations are not interchangeable; for example, DDR4 cannot replace DDR3.
- Form factor: Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs are different physical types.
- Capacity and upgradeability: Confirm the system’s maximum memory, available slots, and whether any memory is soldered and not replaceable.
- Speed and timings: Different specifications can affect the operating speed. Intel notes that modules may synchronize to the slower module’s frequency and timings.
- Slot placement: In systems with multiple slots, the correct channel pairing is model-specific. Follow the motherboard manual’s population rules rather than guessing.
Intel recommends matching capacity, speed, and timings for ideal performance. A compatible module is essential; matching specifications or choosing a matched kit can reduce uncertainty, but replacing both modules is not automatically better than adding one.
Mixed RAM can run slower or fail to boot
Mixing modules is not guaranteed to cause problems, but compatibility depends on the particular system and configuration. Intel’s guidance for 600-series motherboards supporting 12th Generation Core processors warns that mixed part numbers in a specified two-DIMMs-per-channel configuration can result in lower-than-target speed or failure to boot (Intel’s installation guidance). A separate Intel support article documents a boot failure for a particular NUC12WS configuration using memory modules of different densities (Intel’s NUC12WS support case). These cases are specific examples, not evidence that every 8GB-plus-16GB combination will fail.

Memory speed can also change as the system’s configuration changes. Intel’s article on frequency changes when installing more DIMMs discusses that issue, but the outcome depends on the platform and module population rules (Intel’s memory-frequency guidance).

- Add a 16GB module: This can bring the system to 24GB if supported and recognized. It uses the existing 8GB module, but the modules’ specifications and the platform’s channel behavior may differ.
- Replace both with a matched kit: A kit can provide modules with matched specifications and may reduce mismatch uncertainty. It costs more than reusing an existing module and may use capacity you do not need.
Before deciding, weigh total capacity, compatibility, expected channel operation, speed and timings, available slots, future expansion, and price. Use the computer maker’s compatibility list and manual for the final check; without the exact model, it is not possible to specify the right DDR generation, form factor, speed, or module.
