SEGA also announces modern display and interface upgrades, new playable minor factions, and integrated Mod.io support. But as of October 12, 2026, the edition had not yet launched, so its performance, stability, and moment-to-moment improvements cannot be independently assessed. The question is whether the announced changes and purchase terms make it the right version for you.
What is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition?
SEGA describes the release as an updated PC version of SHOGUN 2 and its DLC. The package brings together three campaigns spanning more than 700 years of Japanese history, according to the publisher:

SEGA’s official English FAQ schedules the PC release for October 13, 2026, at 16:00 BST; SEGA Japan lists October 14 locally. The date and time therefore depend on region. SEGA’s description calls it an enhanced version, but that is a publisher claim, not an independent assessment of the finished release. SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ

What is new beyond the DLC bundle?
The announced changes focus on graphics, display support, usability, faction choice, and mod access. The following are features described by SEGA; they do not establish how well they perform in practice.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from 9 different clans and compete online and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation
- Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
- Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
| Area | Announced change | What it could mean |
|---|---|---|
| Visuals | Improved visuals, lighting, and shadows; refreshed textures, models, fog, and environmental effects | A visual refresh for a modern PC release; the actual image quality and performance remain to be assessed after launch. |
| Displays and interface | UI scaling for 1440p and 4K; redesigned UI; ultrawide support | Potentially more usable menus and on-screen text at higher resolutions and wider aspect ratios. The announcement does not establish how readable or well-scaled the interface is in play. |
| Controls and access | Modernized controls and colourblind accessibility options | Changes intended to make the game more approachable and accessible; their implementation and flexibility are not yet independently verified. |
| Campaign options | More than 50 newly playable minor factions | More factions to choose from, though the announcement alone does not show how distinct or balanced their campaigns are. |
| Mods and technology | Integrated Mod.io support and a 64-bit upgrade | A new mod-discovery route and a technical update. Existing original-game mods are not compatible with the Complete Edition. |
| Presentation option | An option for woodblock-inspired animated cutscenes | A stylised presentation choice listed by SEGA Japan. |
| Localization | Japanese and Chinese voice and full-text localization | Additional language options; specific availability may depend on the release and storefront. |

Does it make the best Total War game even better?
That is an editorial question, not a settled fact. Reviewers have praised the original, but those opinions do not establish the quality of this unreleased edition. PC Gamer’s September 2026 announcement described the original as widely considered one of the best Total War games and highlighted Fall of the Samurai. GamesRadar+ placed the original fourth in its 2025 ranking of the best Total War games, pointing to its compact scope, clear unit roles, castle sieges, and the contrast between industrial-era guns and traditional forces in the expansion. These are the outlets’ judgments, not a universal ranking, and neither is a hands-on review of the Complete Edition. PC Gamer’s September 2026 coverage; GamesRadar+’s 2025 ranking.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Steam’s original-game page showed 92% positive from 21,929 English reviews when accessed on October 12, 2026, and 77% positive from 312 recent reviews. These are changing user-review snapshots for the original game, not the Complete Edition. Steam says review periods it identifies as off-topic are excluded from its score calculation. Those signals support interest in the underlying game, not a verdict on the new version. Whether the updated interface works better on 1440p, 4K, or ultrawide screens; whether the new controls feel better; and whether the game runs reliably are questions that require post-release evaluation. SEGA’s announcement of 48.3 million copies sold refers to the cumulative Total War series, not SHOGUN 2 or Complete Edition sales.

Which version should existing players choose?
Keep the original if your mods matter
SEGA explicitly says original SHOGUN 2 mods are incompatible with the Complete Edition. Mods for the original game remain unchanged, and SEGA says the original game remains playable. If your current setup depends on particular mods, the new edition is not a drop-in upgrade for that setup: weigh the announced interface and technical changes against the cost of leaving those mods behind. Which storefront gives you the right package?
SEGA lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG for the PC release, but the included content differs by storefront. This distinction matters most to new buyers deciding whether they want the original game as well as the Complete Edition.
| Storefront | What SEGA says is included | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Complete Edition, plus the original SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC | The Blood Pack is excluded due to age-rating considerations. Existing Steam owners have a separate free-DLC entitlement and time-limited discount described above. |
| Epic Games Store | Complete Edition | SEGA says the original game and its DLC are not included with this purchase. |
| Microsoft Store | Complete Edition | SEGA says the original game and its DLC are not included with this purchase. |
| GOG | Complete Edition | SEGA says the original game and its DLC are not included with this purchase. |
The entitlement details are from SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ. Store listings and terms can change, so verify the package shown on the storefront where you plan to buy.

- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
Is this a review of the finished release?
No. As of October 12, 2026, the Complete Edition was still scheduled for release the following day in the UK. The available evidence supports describing its announced content and purchase terms, but not rating its performance, bugs, balance, usability, or value after play. The 48.3 million figure SEGA cites is series-wide cumulative sales, not evidence of demand for this edition.
