Microsoft’s October 2026 Copilot Notebooks update adds ways to gather project references, delegate simple work, schedule recurring tasks, edit Office files, and create interactive reports. The rollout is staged: several features are in Frontier or described as coming in the following weeks, so availability depends on the feature and tenant.
What the October update adds
Microsoft describes Copilot Notebooks as an AI-powered workspace for a project or topic. The October update broadens what users can do within that workspace, from collecting context to producing and editing deliverables. Microsoft’s October 9 announcement lists task delegation, direct editing of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, and interactive reports among the changes. Build a notebook from a project goal
Instead of starting with an empty workspace, users can describe a project and ask Copilot to create a notebook with relevant references from work data and the web. The update also expands supported reference files to Markdown, TXT, and RTF. Microsoft lists expanded reference types as generally available in its announcement; notebook creation with Copilot is described as coming in the following weeks.

Delegate work and choose the source scope
Copilot can help manage references, keep a notebook current, synthesize project context, and create or edit a single Office file from chat. Users can scope a response to the notebook or broaden it to “Work and web.” That distinction matters: notebook-only responses stay tied to the project materials, while the broader option can draw on work and web sources as well.

Schedule recurring tasks
Users can configure recurring tasks such as a morning brief or weekly status deck, set the frequency and instructions, and view active or inactive automations. In this announcement, “automation” means a scheduled Copilot task; it is not a claim that Copilot can take unrestricted action unattended. Microsoft says simple task automations are coming in the following weeks.
Select a model for notebook chat
Notebook chat gains the option to request deeper reasoning or select a specific GPT model. Microsoft says more models are planned, without naming them in the announcement.
Edit Office files and collaborate in the notebook
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files can be viewed inline and edited on the canvas. Users can also prompt Copilot to add content or adjust formatting, and teammates can collaborate on the same file. This brings document editing into the project workspace rather than limiting the notebook to reference gathering and chat.

Microsoft’s separate Message Center notice discusses licensing for Office capabilities used through the Copilot app: capabilities accessed through Chat are included with the Microsoft 365 Copilot user subscription license, while Office capabilities accessed through Cowork use usage-based billing. That notice is scoped to the app capabilities it describes; it is not a complete licensing or price guide for every Notebooks feature. Microsoft 365 Message Center archive MC1479277
Create interactive reports, PDFs, and audio overviews
Interactive reports and PDFs
Notebook content can be turned into interactive reports with executive summaries, visual insights, filters, drill-down sections, and source-grounded references. Users can also ask chat to create a PDF from notebook content. Microsoft lists reports and PDF creation as Frontier features. These output options complement Office files; the announcement does not provide measured performance results or quantify time saved.
Updated audio overviews
Audio overviews can draw on more notebook references, including Outlook email, Teams meetings and chats, OneNote and Loop pages, and TXT files. The update also describes a “Critique and Debate” format and topic-based episodes. Audio files can be saved to OneDrive with inherited sensitivity labels. Microsoft describes these audio changes as coming in the following weeks.

The October announcement is a staged-release update, not confirmation that every capability is live for every user. Microsoft’s Message Center says the Notebooks updates will roll out to Frontier later in October 2026. The feature-level statuses in the announcement distinguish what is generally available, in Frontier, and forthcoming. How to decide which capability to use
- For an answer grounded in a project: Use the notebook as the source scope; choose “Work and web” when broader context is appropriate.
- For a recurring deliverable: Set up a scheduled task, such as a daily brief or weekly status deck, and specify its cadence and instructions.
- For a document or spreadsheet deliverable: Use inline Office editing when the work needs to remain an editable Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, particularly if teammates need to collaborate.
- For stakeholder consumption: Use an interactive report when readers need summaries, visual insights, filters, or drill-downs; use PDF creation when a portable document is the desired output.
- For a spoken recap: Use an audio overview when the relevant notebook references include supported work materials such as emails, meetings, chats, or notes.
These are different output and workflow choices, not evidence that one format is best for every project. Microsoft’s announcement does not report comparative productivity results.
