Top-Freezer vs. Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators: Which Uses Less Energy?

Top-freezer refrigerators generally use less energy, but annual kWh and capacity are the best way to compare specific models.

Top-freezer refrigerators generally use less energy than bottom-freezer models, but freezer placement alone cannot tell you which of two specific refrigerators will use less electricity. ENERGY STAR says top-freezer models “tend to use the least energy” among top-freezer, bottom-freezer, and side-by-side configurations. For a purchase, compare the models’ annual energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and their capacity.

Why top-freezer models tend to use less energy

ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance identifies freezer placement as a broad efficiency tendency: models with the freezer on top tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side refrigerators. That is a category-level pattern, not a guarantee that every top-freezer refrigerator beats every bottom-freezer model. The specific design and features of each appliance matter too. How to compare two actual refrigerators

  1. Compare annual energy use. Find each model’s stated annual electricity consumption in kWh per year on its energy label or product listing. A lower figure means lower standardized electricity use. ENERGY STAR’s certified-product records include model-level figures, but listings can change. ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator results
  2. Match capacity as closely as possible. A larger refrigerator generally uses more energy, so comparing a small top-freezer unit with a much larger bottom-freezer model can obscure the effect of configuration. ENERGY STAR says the most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet and recommends choosing an appropriately sized refrigerator. ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance
  3. Check the features. Note the defrost type and whether the refrigerator has an automatic or through-the-door ice maker. Federal efficiency criteria account for configuration, size, defrost, and ice-maker functionality, so models with different features may not be directly comparable. 4. Estimate your electricity cost. Multiply each model’s annual kWh figure by your electricity price per kWh. For example, if a model uses 500 kWh per year and your rate is $0.20 per kWh, the estimate is $100 per year. Use your own utility rate; there is no universal dollar saving attributable to freezer placement.

What ENERGY STAR certification tells you—and what it does not

ENERGY STAR certification is a useful way to identify products meeting the program’s efficiency criteria, and the product results show each listed refrigerator’s configuration, capacity, and annual energy use. Certification does not mean every certified top-freezer model uses less energy than every certified bottom-freezer model. Compare the individual listings and choose models with similar capacity and features before deciding which is more efficient.

For example, ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient results include 18.2-cubic-foot bottom-freezer models listed at 456 kWh per year and 553 kWh per year. Those entries illustrate variation between individual products; they are not a controlled, size- and feature-matched comparison that establishes a freezer-placement advantage. How to choose

  • If two refrigerators suit your household and are similar in capacity and features, the top-freezer model is the better starting bet for lower energy use.
  • If you are choosing between specific models, use their annual kWh figures rather than relying on the freezer position or certification label alone.
  • Choose a refrigerator sized for your needs; extra capacity can mean extra energy use.
