A “Token Ring connector” is not one universal plug. It is a general name for the physical interface used by a Token Ring adapter, port, or cable. IBM documentation describes several forms, including RJ-45, 9-pin D-shell (DB-9), and an IBM Cabling System data connector. To identify or buy the right cable, match the exact equipment model, both connector ends, cable type, and network speed.
What a Token Ring connector does
A connector is the physical termination on a network adapter, device port, or cable. It is separate from the MAU or MSAU: the adapter cable links a computer or other station to the network cabling, while the multistation access unit provides that station access to the ring. IBM’s network guide describes an MSAU as allowing up to eight attached devices to access a ring (IBM, OS/400 LAN, Frame-Relay and ATM Support V4R2, 1998).

One IBM cable example has a nine-pin D connector at the system end and a modular plug at the cabling end. The precise arrangement depends on the device and network cabling; a plug’s appearance alone does not establish its function.

| Connector or arrangement | Documented use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RJ-45 | An IBM OSA-2 Token Ring port connects to a MAU/MSAU. The cited equipment supports shielded twisted pair (STP) or unshielded twisted pair (UTP), with optional conversion to an IBM Cabling System data connector or female 9-pin D-shell. | Confirm the port model, cable type, and required network-side connector in the equipment documentation. (IBM OSA-2 Token Ring interface documentation) |
| 9-pin D-shell / DB-9 | IBM documents a 9-pin D connector at the system end of an adapter cable and a DB-9 D-shell receptacle on later OSA-Express Token Ring equipment. | On the cited OSA-Express equipment, only one of the RJ-45 and DB-9 receptacles is used at a time. (IBM Redbooks, IBM eServer zSeries 900 Technical Guide, 2001) |
| IBM Cabling System data connector | An optional conversion connector is documented for the cited IBM equipment. | Identify the network-side receptacle and the exact conversion part needed; this is a legacy cabling option. (IBM OSA-2 Token Ring interface documentation) |
| Modular plug | Shown at the cabling end of an IBM Token Ring adapter cable. | Do not assume an Ethernet cable is compatible based on the modular plug’s shape. Match the cable and wiring to the adapter and network equipment. (IBM, OS/400 LAN, Frame-Relay and ATM Support V4R2, 1998) |
These are examples from specific IBM systems, not a complete inventory of connectors used by every Token Ring vendor. For older or model-specific installations, use the adapter or port model number to find its manual.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to identify the right connector and cable
- Find the equipment model. Check the network adapter or device label and inspect its port. The phrase “Token Ring connector” by itself does not specify the plug.
- Identify the network endpoint. Determine whether the cable connects to a MAU/MSAU or to a particular cabling-system receptacle.
- Match both ends and the cable type. Compare the station-side connector, network-side connector, and required STP or UTP cabling against the device manual.
- Check Token Ring speed. IBM’s cited system examples use 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps; adapters on a given ring must operate at the same speed. These are requirements of the documented systems, not a universal specification for every product. (IBM, OS/400 LAN, Frame-Relay and ATM Support V4R2, 1998; IBM OSA-2 Token Ring interface documentation)
- Use distance and cable limits from the exact manual. For example, the cited z900 OSA-Express guide specifies Category 5 UTP up to 100 m for its RJ-45 connection; its STP connection uses a DB-9 D-shell. Do not apply that limit to other adapters without their documentation. (IBM Redbooks, IBM eServer zSeries 900 Technical Guide, 2001)
Can you identify Token Ring from the plug’s shape?
No. A nine-pin connector or RJ-45-style modular jack is not enough to identify a port as Token Ring. The equipment model and its documentation are needed to establish the interface and compatible cable. Likewise, an RJ-45 appearance does not prove that an Ethernet cable or Ethernet device will work with the Token Ring equipment.
