TLC stores three bits per NAND cell; QLC stores four. That extra density can make QLC a fit for capacity-focused, mostly read-heavy storage, while TLC is a sensible place to start when you expect frequent or sustained writes. Neither label guarantees a particular drive’s speed or lifespan: compare the exact model’s endurance rating, cache behavior, warranty, price, and compatibility.
What TLC and QLC mean
TLC (triple-level cell) stores three bits in each NAND cell; QLC (quad-level cell) stores four. More bits per cell allow higher storage density, which can support higher-capacity drives. The cell type is only one part of an SSD, however. The controller, firmware, capacity, cache design, and drive model also shape real-world performance and endurance. Micron’s TLC and QLC overview explains the bits-per-cell distinction.

How to choose for your workload
Mostly reads, with occasional writes
QLC may suit a capacity-oriented drive used mainly for reading stored files, provided the specific model’s endurance rating, warranty, price, and compatibility meet your needs. A QLC label alone does not establish that a drive is a good value or suitable for every read-heavy use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFrequent or sustained writes
Compare TLC models as candidates, then check their rated endurance and what happens when any write cache fills. Regular large transfers, repeated content creation, or other write-heavy work make these model-level details especially relevant. Do not assume every TLC drive outperforms or outlasts every QLC drive.

Everyday use or an unclear workload
There is no universal rule that everyday users need TLC or that QLC is always sufficient. Estimate how much data you write and how often, including whether you regularly move large files. Then compare the actual drives’ specifications against that use.
Why burst-write speed may not last
Many consumer SSDs use an SLC cache in front of TLC or QLC NAND. That cache can help a drive handle bursts of writes quickly, but performance may change after the cache fills. Cache size and behavior vary by model and operating conditions, so a headline burst speed does not by itself describe a long transfer. Check for documented cache behavior or independent measurements of the exact model if sustained writes matter. SanDisk’s QLC explainer discusses QLC in a manufacturer’s product context.

Compare endurance ratings and warranties
Look up the model’s TBW (terabytes written) or DWPD (drive writes per day) rating and its warranty. These are drive-specific figures, not fixed values for all TLC or QLC SSDs; read them in light of your workload. SNIA describes these common ways vendors express endurance: SNIA’s SSD endurance overview.

That is a manufacturer-stated example for the product context described there, not a typical or guaranteed rating for QLC drives generally. Check the warranty and endurance specification for the precise model and capacity you are considering.

Use a model-level checklist before buying
- Workload: Decide whether the drive will mostly serve reads and occasional writes or handle frequent, large, sustained writes.
- Endurance and warranty: Compare the exact model’s TBW or DWPD rating and warranty against your expected use.
- Sustained writes: Look for cache details and performance after the cache is exhausted, where the manufacturer documents them or reliable testing covers that exact model.
- Capacity and value: Compare similar drives at the capacity you need using current prices and price per terabyte. QLC’s density can be useful for capacity-oriented storage, but the NAND label alone does not prove a better deal.
- Compatibility: Verify form factor, interface or connector, device support, and any capacity limits. TLC or QLC does not tell you whether an SSD will fit or work in your computer.
Which type should you investigate first?
| Use case | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity-focused storage that is mostly read | Consider QLC models | Model-specific endurance, warranty, compatibility, value, and sustained-write behavior |
| Frequent or sustained writing | Compare TLC models | TBW or DWPD, warranty, cache exhaustion behavior, and performance for the exact model |
| General-purpose use or uncertain write volume | Compare both types | Expected write workload, endurance rating, warranty, price per capacity, and compatibility |
There is no universal speed, endurance, or price-per-terabyte figure that makes one NAND type the winner across all consumer SSDs. Make the decision between specific drives, not just between TLC and QLC labels.
