Choose an SEO and AI search platform by matching its workflows to your team’s needs, then verifying how it measures performance, what it includes, and whether its results can be checked against first-party data. No platform can guarantee rankings or AI citations. Google says its ordinary SEO requirements remain the foundation for appearing as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Start with what Google requires—and what a platform cannot promise
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear as a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link. Google says there are no additional technical requirements specific to those features, and eligibility does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or shown. Its guidance emphasizes crawl access, internal links, text content, useful pages, and structured data that matches visible content. There is no documented AI-specific schema or special file requirement. See Google’s guidance on AI features in Search.

This matters when assessing promises about AI search optimization, also called AEO or GEO. A tool may help teams analyze visibility, research prompts, or improve content workflows, but it cannot make a page eligible by bypassing Google’s search systems or guarantee a citation. Google says third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking and AI systems; use Google Search guidance to judge recommendations, and treat vendor claims as claims to verify.

Before booking demos, list the decisions the software should help you make. A platform that is useful to a technical SEO team may be a poor fit for an agency managing many clients or a small editorial team focused on content planning.
- Technical SEO and crawling: Can it crawl the scale and structure of your site, identify indexing or internal-linking problems, and reveal blocked resources or bots? Can you validate findings with first-party tools?
- Keyword and competitor research: Which countries, languages, search engines, and databases are covered? Are volume and difficulty estimates explained as estimates? Can you identify competitor and topic gaps?
- Rank and SERP monitoring: Can you track the locations, devices, keywords, and SERP features that matter? Check update frequency and historical retention.
- AI visibility measurement: Which answer engines and search features are included? Are prompts supplied by you or generated by the vendor? Can you see cited URLs and understand the method?
- Content workflow: Does the tool support briefs, coverage checks, optimization, and editorial collaboration? Are recommendations explainable and reviewable by subject experts?
- Reporting and integrations: Can you combine tool output with Search Console, analytics, CRM, or BI data? Can reports connect visibility measures to business outcomes rather than presenting scores alone?
- Scale, governance, and usability: Are permissions, domains or brands, API access, support, and onboarding suitable? Can the intended users act on findings without creating an analyst bottleneck?
- Cost and limits: Verify included projects, users, tracked keywords or prompts, crawl credits, historical data, add-ons, renewal terms, and contract requirements.
Build a weighted scorecard and verify proof
Score only the capabilities that matter to your workflow. Give each criterion an importance weight, then rate every shortlisted platform against the same evidence standard:
- Documented: The vendor describes the capability in current product documentation.
- Demonstrated: You saw it work in a buyer-led trial using your site, queries, and markets.
- Not verified: The claim or behavior remains unconfirmed.
A feature checklist is not proof of accuracy or business impact. During a trial, use your own representative queries and locations, inspect sample outputs, and check whether you can reproduce measurements over time. Ask what the platform counts as “visibility,” “share of voice,” “citation,” and sentiment; whether it separates observed results from estimates and recommendations; and whether reported outcomes can be connected to first-party visits, conversions, or leads.
Test how AI visibility metrics are produced
AI-answer measurements can depend on which prompts are sampled, where and in what language they are run, and how often results are refreshed. Ask each vendor:

- Which markets and languages are covered, and how are location-specific results generated?
- How often are results updated, and can measurements be repeated consistently?
- Does the report show cited URLs and explain how a visibility or citation measure is calculated?
- Which answer engines and features are covered, and are their results kept distinct?
- Can your team export or integrate the results with first-party analytics and business data?
Semrush says its Brand Performance reporting uses synthetic prompts based on a domain and location and updates automatically each week. That is a vendor-described methodology, not independent validation of accuracy. Its documentation also describes visibility benchmarking, prompt research, keyword and AI prompt position tracking, crawler checks, content recommendations, competitor comparisons, and reporting integrations; availability varies by toolkit and plan. See Semrush’s feature documentation and its Help Center.

Compare documented workflows without assuming a winner
Available product documentation can help you decide which vendors merit a trial, but it does not establish which platform is more accurate or effective. The examples below describe documented capabilities, not independent product tests.
| Platform | Documented workflow examples | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Semrush | AI visibility benchmarking for ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews; brand performance and synthetic prompt reporting; competitor comparisons; prompt research; keyword and AI prompt position tracking; crawler checks; content recommendations; reporting integrations. | Which capabilities are available in the toolkit and plan you would buy; how its prompts and visibility measures work; current limits and price. |
| Ahrefs | AI keyword suggestions, intent grouping in SERP reports, translation and metrics for up to 10,000 keywords, a content helper that grades topic coverage against competing SERP pages, and batch AI title and meta-description generation. | Plan and project-boost constraints. The cited documentation does not establish comprehensive tracking of visibility in AI-generated answers. |
Ahrefs describes these features in its Help Center. Do not infer comprehensive AI-answer visibility tracking from the presence of AI-assisted keyword or content features. Ask each vendor to demonstrate your site, query set, markets, and reporting workflow.

Check total cost, limits, and fit before committing
Compare the full package rather than a starting price. Semrush’s feature page listed Semrush One starting at $199 per month when accessed; pricing can change, so confirm the current price, bundle, and included limits directly before purchase. A comparable Ahrefs price is not established here. For either vendor, confirm the plan-specific allowances for projects, seats, crawls, tracked keywords or prompts, historical data, add-ons, support, and contract terms.
Use a trial or demonstration to test whether the actual users can answer real questions without workarounds. Include at least one technical issue, one competitor or keyword task, one reporting need, and—if AI visibility matters to your organization—one repeatable prompt-measurement task. Record what the product showed, what could be independently checked, and what remained an estimate or vendor recommendation.

Keep AI optimization recommendations grounded in search guidance
Google’s generative-search guidance recommends the same fundamentals as its wider SEO guidance: technical accessibility and structure, and unique, valuable, helpful, reliable, people-first content. Google points site owners to Search Console’s generative AI performance report. It also cautions against unsupported tactics such as unnecessary AI text files, artificial content chunking, or inauthentic mentions. Review Google’s AI feature guidance when evaluating platform recommendations.
Ask vendors to explain which recommendations are based on observed data, which are estimates, and which are opinions. Reject claims of guaranteed rankings or citations, and be wary of advice that conflicts with current official search policies without a clear, testable rationale.
