The sender may also pay to fund or buy crypto, a conversion spread may reduce its value, and the recipient may face off-ramp or withdrawal costs. Compare the total sender payment with the amount expected in the recipient’s currency for the same route—not just the network charge.
What costs can make up a crypto remittance?
A remittance can involve several steps between the sender’s money and the recipient’s usable funds. Which charges apply depends on the provider, asset, blockchain, country corridor, funding method and payout method. A stablecoin does not remove those dependencies: its payment path may still involve funding, a wallet or service provider, conversion and disbursement.

| Stage | Possible cost | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Funding or purchase | A bank, card or service charge may apply when adding funds or buying crypto. | Check the funding method’s quoted charge. The available evidence does not establish current funding prices for a particular provider. |
| Conversion into crypto | The provider’s retail exchange rate may include a spread against a wholesale reference rate. | Compare the offered rate with a relevant reference rate, if available. A separate transfer fee of zero does not mean conversion is cost-free. |
| Blockchain transfer | A network fee may be incurred to process a transaction on a permissionless blockchain. | Check the asset and network selected, and the fee shown for that transaction. The charge is network- and transaction-dependent. |
| Withdrawal from a platform | A custodial exchange or platform may add its own withdrawal charge to the network fee. | Look for separate line items. Binance.US, for example, says it displays the network fee and any applicable exchange withdrawal fee before confirmation; that is a provider-specific example, not a universal fee policy. |
| Off-ramp and currency conversion | A recipient or payout service may charge to convert crypto into local currency or offer a rate that reduces the proceeds. | Check the destination-currency amount after conversion and any stated charges. |
| Recipient withdrawal or payout | Moving funds from a wallet or platform to a bank, card or cash payout may incur a fee or deduction. | Check whether the quoted recipient amount is already spendable or whether another cash-out step remains. |
| Other parties or taxes | Agents, other institutions or government taxes may affect the total on some routes. | Include applicable disclosed charges and deductions in the comparison. |
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that an exchange-rate spread is a percentage difference between the retail rate offered to a consumer and a wholesale rate. It can therefore be a real transfer cost even when no separate fee is advertised. The CFPB also warns that conversion and withdrawal costs for digital-wallet remittances can be overlooked in “free” claims.
How to compare the real cost of two routes
Use the same transaction assumptions for both offers. A comparison is not meaningful if one quote uses a different funding method, destination currency or payout option.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Match the route: use the same send amount, origin and destination countries, funding method, crypto asset and network where relevant, recipient currency, and payout method.
- Record what the sender pays: include funding charges, provider fees and applicable taxes—not only the blockchain fee.
- Inspect the conversion: note the offered exchange rate and any stated spread or markup, including on the crypto purchase and the recipient’s off-ramp.
- Separate transfer charges: record the network fee and any platform withdrawal fee as distinct items where the quote allows.
- Check deductions and delivery: note disclosed third-party charges, the expected destination-currency amount, the delivery estimate, and whether the offer is promotional or limited.
- Compare the net result: weigh the total sender payment against the amount expected to reach the recipient. The route with the smallest network fee is not necessarily the route that delivers the most.
For remittance transfers covered by U.S. rules, CFPB consumer guidance describes pre-payment disclosures that include applicable fees and taxes, the exchange rate, the total transaction amount, covered third-party fees and the amount expected at the destination. The CFPB says U.S. remittance rules generally protect consumers using a qualifying provider to send more than $15 internationally; that figure is a legal-scope threshold, not a fee. These statements concern the U.S. framework and are not a description of legal requirements in every country or for every crypto service.
The OECD’s transparency guidance identifies total transaction cost, currency-conversion charges, expected delivery time, payment-status tracking and terms as useful dimensions to disclose. They are comparison criteria, not a guarantee that every provider or jurisdiction supplies all of them.

Why a “free” transfer can still cost money
“No transfer fee” may describe only one line item. The provider may still use an exchange rate with a spread, charge for a purchase or withdrawal, or leave the recipient to pay for conversion or payout. A quote that omits these stages does not establish the amount the recipient will ultimately receive.

The CFPB’s 2024 Consumer Financial Protection Circular 2024-02 cautions that remittance providers may be liable under the Consumer Financial Protection Act for deceptive marketing about transfer speed or cost. Its guidance specifically discusses exchange-rate spreads and costs associated with wallet conversion and withdrawal. Whether U.S. rules apply depends on the transaction and provider; the guidance should not be treated as a universal legal rule for crypto transfers worldwide.

Why a crypto withdrawal fee can exceed the network fee
The network fee pays for processing a transaction on the blockchain. A platform withdrawal charge, when one applies, is a separate provider charge. A custodial platform can show both, so the amount it quotes for withdrawing crypto need not equal the network cost alone. Check the transaction preview for an itemized breakdown before confirming; fee display and pricing are provider-specific.

There is no single current price that applies to all crypto remittances. Network and provider charges vary, and the net cost also depends on the corridor, exchange rates and cash-out method. Use a current quote for the exact transaction rather than treating a general fee figure as a reliable estimate.

The IMF’s 2023 paper, Elements of Effective Policies for Crypto Assets, cites an average fee of 5.7% for a $200 remittance in 2020. That is a historical remittance figure, not a current price for a crypto transfer or a like-for-like estimate for a specific route. It should not be used to infer what a crypto or stablecoin transfer costs today.
