Tkinter Entry Widget: Get, Set, Validate, Placeholder, and Password Examples

Use Tkinter Entry methods to read, replace, and validate single-line input. Learn when to use StringVar, how password masking works, and why placeholder guidance should stay separate from the field value.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Tkinter Entry is a single-line editable field. Use .get() to read its current text, .delete() and .insert() to replace it, and a linked StringVar when Python code and the widget need to share a value. Entry validation can accept or reject edits, while show masks displayed characters for password fields. Tkinter’s documented Entry API does not include a native placeholder option, so keep guidance separate from the field’s actual value.

The examples use Python’s Tkinter interface documented in Python 3.14.8. Exact behavior depends on the Python and Tcl/Tk versions installed on your system. See the Python Tkinter reference and the ttk reference.

Choose between tk.Entry and ttk.Entry

Both provide a single-line field and the Entry methods shown below. Choose classic tk.Entry if you need its classic widget options; choose ttk.Entry when you want themed widgets consistent with the rest of a ttk interface. They are not fully option-compatible: for example, ttk widgets do not use classic fg and bg options; ttk appearance is managed with ttk.Style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import tkinter as tk
from tkinter import ttk

root = tk.Tk()
classic_field = tk.Entry(root)
themed_field = ttk.Entry(root)

classic_field.pack()
themed_field.pack()
root.mainloop()

Use one style consistently across an application where possible. The examples below use classic tk.Entry unless noted.

How do I get text from a Tkinter Entry?

Call .get() to retrieve the field’s current value as a Python string. Read it when the relevant action occurs—for example, inside a button callback—so you get the user’s latest input rather than a value captured when the widget was created.

import tkinter as tk

root = tk.Tk()
entry = tk.Entry(root)
entry.pack()

def read_value():
    print(entry.get())

tk.Button(root, text="Read", command=read_value).pack()
root.mainloop()

How do I set or replace the value?

To replace all content, delete from index 0 to tk.END, then insert the new string at index 0.

entry.delete(0, tk.END)
entry.insert(0, "hello")

.insert(index, string) inserts text immediately before the chosen index. .delete(first, last) removes the range starting at first and ending just before last. If you omit last, it deletes one character at first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Entry indexes can be integer positions, or special indexes such as insert, end, anchor, sel.first, sel.last, and @x (the character at a horizontal pixel position). Selection indexes require an existing selection; using them when there is no selection raises an error.

When should I use a StringVar?

Direct widget methods are convenient for a one-off read or replacement. Use a retained tk.StringVar when other callbacks or controls also need to observe or update the field. Attach it with textvariable, then call the variable’s .get() and .set() methods.

import tkinter as tk
from tkinter import ttk

root = tk.Tk()
contents = tk.StringVar(value="starting value")
entry = ttk.Entry(root, textvariable=contents)
entry.pack()

def update_value():
    print(contents.get())
    contents.set("updated from Python")

tk.Button(root, text="Read and update", command=update_value).pack()
root.mainloop()

A normal Python string is not a linked variable: changing it does not update the widget. Keep a Python reference to the StringVar for as long as the widget uses it. Tkinter variables are backed by the Tcl interpreter, and discarding the variable can remove the underlying Tcl variable and break the connection.

How do I validate input in Tkinter?

An Entry’s validate and validatecommand options let a callback accept or reject proposed edits. This example accepts only digits and uses the key validation mode, which calls the function when a keystroke would change the field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import tkinter as tk

root = tk.Tk()

def is_digits(proposed_value):
    return proposed_value.isdigit() or proposed_value == ""

validate_command = (root.register(is_digits), "%P")
entry = tk.Entry(
    root,
    validate="key",
    validatecommand=validate_command,
)
entry.pack()

root.mainloop()

root.register() makes the Python function available as a Tcl callback. The %P substitution supplies the proposed value of the field if the edit is allowed; the callback returns a boolean. Allowing the empty string makes deletion possible. Callback modes and substitutions should be checked against the Python and Tcl/Tk versions installed with your application.

How do I make a password Entry?

Set show to a mask character such as an asterisk. The field displays that character in place of each entered character.

password_entry = tk.Entry(root, show="*")
password_entry.pack()

This changes the visual display only. It does not encrypt the value, protect it in application memory, or provide an authentication system.

How do I add placeholder guidance?

The documented Tkinter Entry API does not provide a native placeholder option. A reliable approach is to put a persistent label beside or above the field, rather than inserting instructional text into the Entry. Then .get() contains only the field’s actual value, and the label remains available as guidance.

label = tk.Label(root, text="Email address")
label.pack(anchor="w")
email_entry = tk.Entry(root)
email_entry.pack(fill="x")

If you implement a placeholder by putting text inside the field and clearing it on focus, you must track whether the displayed text is placeholder content. Otherwise a read can mistake instructions for user input. Also account for fields that already contain a user-provided value and for focus and keyboard behavior. A separate label avoids that data ambiguity.
