TinyJS App Studio is a graphical front end for the TinyJS command-line tool. It lets you create a TinyJS app from a template, wrap an existing website in a desktop window, open a TinyJS project already on disk, preview it, edit its files, and run or build it while watching the CLI output. TinyJS itself is a desktop runtime that pairs a txiki.js JavaScript backend with the webview the operating system already provides, rather than shipping Electron or Chromium. The vendor says a resulting app is about 6 MB. That figure is the vendor’s own approximate number, not an independent measurement.
Two details need to be settled before you rely on the tool: which platforms are production-grade, and what “no Node” means in practice. Both are covered below.

What the Studio does
The Studio, described by its author in a DEV Community article, is built with TinyJS, which the author presents as a deliberate test of the toolchain. It covers four core workflows:
- Create an app from a vanilla template or a Vite-based template.
- Wrap a website by entering its URL and choosing window options.
- Add an existing TinyJS folder to the project sidebar without moving the files on disk.
- Operate on a selected project: run, build, stop, duplicate, or reveal it in the file system.
Around those workflows the Studio provides a live preview, a configuration inspector, a file tree, streamed CLI logs, and an editor built on a vendored copy of CodeMirror 6. The logs matter in practice: the GUI does not hide the CLI, so error output from a build appears in the same window you used to start it.

Two preview modes
The preview has two convenience modes described in the article. Menu-bar mode shows how a menu-bar app panel will look. The iPhone-shaped preview changes the user-agent preset so you can check a mobile layout. Both are preview features only. They do not mean TinyJS targets iOS or Android. TinyJS is a desktop runtime.
How the runtime is put together
TinyJS describes its architecture on its official product page. The backend is JavaScript running on txiki.js. The window is the operating system’s own webview: WebKit on macOS, WebView2 on Windows, and WebKitGTK on Linux. The product page states the backend is “JavaScript, not Rust, so there is no compile step and no second language in the project.”
The local page and the backend talk over a private Unix socket on Unix-like systems, and over a named pipe on Windows. They do not talk over an HTTP server listening on a port. The runtime exposes native capabilities such as menus and dialogs, and it can package apps for desktop distribution.

| Component | Vendor-stated size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| txiki.js binary | About 5.6 MB | JavaScript backend |
| Launcher | About 1–2 MB | Starts the app window |
| Project files | Depends on the app | Added on top of the runtime |
| Browser engine | Not bundled | Uses the OS webview (WebKit, WebView2, or WebKitGTK) |
The approximate total of about 6 MB is therefore the runtime plus launcher before your own assets. A larger site or bundled front-end framework adds to it. Because the engine is not shipped, the same app may render differently on different operating systems, which is the main trade-off of the design.
Platform status: what is stable and what is beta
The two sources disagree in emphasis, so read both dates carefully.
| Platform | TinyJS runtime (official product page, accessed 2026) | Studio (author’s DEV Community article, accessed 2026-10-07) |
|---|---|---|
| macOS | Stable | Primary platform |
| Windows | Beta | Beta |
| Linux | Beta | Beta |
The Studio article also says the wrap command was being contributed upstream and was not in a release at the time it was written. Before you describe the website-wrapping workflow as available in a current release, check the Studio’s repository and the version of the TinyJS CLI you have installed. Status labels change, and these are the labels as reported in 2026.

Wrapping a website: what to check first
Wrapping is the feature most readers will ask about first, so it deserves the most caution. The TinyJS documentation says the tiny bridge, the object that exposes native capabilities to a page, is injected into every origin. Without restriction, a wrapped page could call backend functions that have filesystem access. Configure an origin-specific capability gate deliberately so that only the origin you trust receives those permissions. Treat any third-party content inside a wrapped site as untrusted.

The documentation also covers how a wrapped site behaves beyond its own pages. You can configure dialogs, downloads, popups, and navigation for hosted sites. Those settings are the place to decide whether a link opens in the app or in the default browser, and whether a download is allowed at all.
Distribution and updates
For shipping, TinyJS documents an updater that checks checksums and signatures before applying an update. The Studio gives you GUI access to build operations, but its article does not verify that a built app passes app-store review, that code signing succeeds on every platform, or what the end-user install experience looks like. Test those steps on the platforms you intend to ship to.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Node, npm, and what “no Node” really means
The claim that TinyJS needs no Node is accurate for the runtime. The backend is txiki.js, not Node, so an app does not ship a Node runtime. The limits are specific:
- Native Node addons do not apply. The product page says so explicitly.
- Pure-JavaScript npm packages can be bundled into the app.
- Vite-based templates need Node on the development machine for their build workflow. Node is a build-time requirement in that case, not a shipped dependency.
The sources do not establish which specific front-end frameworks or TypeScript setups work through the Studio’s templates, so test your own stack before committing to it.

How it compares with Electron
If you are weighing TinyJS against Electron or a similar tool, compare them on five axes:
- Shipped size and browser-engine ownership. TinyJS uses the OS webview; Electron bundles Chromium.
- Backend language and Node compatibility. TinyJS uses JavaScript on txiki.js; Node addons do not apply.
- Rendering consistency across operating systems. A bundled engine gives you one rendering path; OS webviews vary.
- Platform maturity. Check the status of each target platform on the day you build.
- The website-to-native API boundary. Decide the capability gate for each origin you load.
The published sources support these comparison points but do not include independent performance, reliability, or security test results. Run your own measurements before drawing conclusions about speed or memory.
Who it suits
TinyJS App Studio fits developers who already write JavaScript, want a small desktop shell for a web app or a site they own, and can accept an OS-dependent rendering path and per-platform testing. It is a poor fit for mobile targets, for apps that depend on native Node addons, or for teams that need one identical browser engine on every machine.
