A theoretical model suggests that primordial black holes could behave as five-dimensional objects—but it does not show that such black holes or an extra dimension have been observed. In a paper published September 28, 2026, in Physical Review D, Luis A. Anchordoqui, Alek Bedroya, and Dieter Lüst apply quantum-gravity constraints to several proposed ways these black holes might form in a “dark dimension” scenario.
What are primordial black holes?
Primordial black holes, or PBHs, are hypothetical black holes that would have formed in the early universe. That distinguishes them from familiar black holes thought to form later when massive stars collapse. The word “ancient” in the headline refers to this proposed early-universe origin; it does not mean scientists have found ancient black holes.

The paper examines PBH formation in a theoretical framework called the dark-dimension scenario. Its result concerns how black holes would behave within that model, not evidence that the universe has an extra spatial dimension.
What does the paper conclude?
The authors assess PBHs made through inflation, phase transitions, and cosmic strings. Applying quantum-gravity constraints, they conclude that the viable mechanisms they consider lead to five-dimensional PBHs, except if exotic new physics operates at low energies. The conclusion is therefore conditional on both the framework and that caveat—not a universal claim about every possible black hole model.

The authors state in their abstract: “Applying quantum gravity constraints, we demonstrate that any viable mechanism, barring exotic new physics at low energies, inevitably leads to the formation of five-dimensional PBHs.” That is a theoretical result, not a detection.

The journal abstract names all three mechanisms, while the four-to-five-dimensional distinction above is the account given by Phys.org; it should not be mistaken for an independently established observation.

What does “five-dimensional” mean here?
It describes the modeled behavior of a black hole in the dark-dimension framework. The paper asks whether black holes formed under its assumptions should be treated as effectively four-dimensional or five-dimensional, applying quantum-gravity constraints to that question. The phrase does not mean a black hole has been measured moving through a fifth dimension, nor does it establish that an extra dimension exists in nature.

The authors say that cosmic-string-produced PBHs can have lifetimes comparable to the age of the Universe. They do not give a precise lifetime in the abstract, so this should be understood as a qualitative result within the model, not a specific predicted number or evidence that such an object has survived.

What is the proposed KM3NeT neutrino connection?
The authors discuss a possible connection between their scenario and a high-energy neutrino detected by KM3NeT. This is a potential implication raised by the authors, not confirmation that a primordial black hole produced the neutrino or that the dark-dimension model is correct.
