Google says a fix for Android Auto’s intermittently missing cellular signal icon is rolling out, but it was not widely available as of October 5, 2026. Some users reported the signal bars returning after updating to Android Auto 17.8; that version is associated with the fix, not a guarantee that every device has received it.
What the missing Android Auto signal icon means
The issue is that the cellular signal indicator—the bars shown in Android Auto’s status area—can disappear from the screen. That missing icon alone does not establish that the phone has lost cellular service. Google’s confirmation concerns the displayed indicator, not a service outage affecting every user.

Some users describe the problem as “Network Signal Bar is vanished from Android Auto.” The phrase appears in a Google Android Auto Help Community thread; Google cautions that community content may not be verified or current.
Google says a fix is rolling out
In a statement quoted by 9to5Google on October 5, 2026, Google employee Mishaal Rahman said: “We’re aware of reports about the missing cellular signal, and we’re actually currently rolling out a fix that should hopefully address this issue! The fix isn’t widely available yet, though, so it may take some time to reach your device – if you want to receive it sooner, though, you can enroll in the Android Auto beta”

The key qualification is availability: Google said the rollout was underway, but not widespread. The available reporting does not give a geographic schedule, a complete stable-build list, or device-specific delivery dates, so it cannot establish when a particular phone will receive the fix.
Does Android Auto 17.8 include the fix?
Reports associate Android Auto 17.8 with the fix. 9to5Google said version 17.8 seemed to deliver it at least in part and was rolling out on the stable track. Android Authority reported on October 2, 2026 that some users saw the bars return after updating to v17.8, while noting that the initial reports involved a beta build.

- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips

These reports suggest v17.8 may restore the indicator for some users; they do not show that every v17.8 installation contains the fix or that updating will resolve the symptom on every device.
What you can do now
Check for the stable update
Check whether Android Auto has an update available through the app store on your phone. If Android Auto 17.8 or a later version is offered, installing it is a reasonable way to receive the reported software change. The reporting does not establish an exact version or delivery date for every device.

Consider the beta only if enrollment is available
Rahman suggested joining the Android Auto beta as a possible way to receive the fix sooner. However, 9to5Google reported that the beta program was full at the time of its October 5 article. Enrollment status can change, and beta access is not a guaranteed route to an immediate fix. The report also mentioned sideloading at the user’s own risk; it is not a routine recommendation.
Do not treat the icon alone as proof of lost service
If the bars disappear, check the phone’s own cellular status before concluding that the phone has no signal. The reports establish an Android Auto display problem, not a loss of service in every affected case.
Is a cable, adapter, or head-unit replacement needed?
No hardware remedy is supported by the reporting. The identified response is a software fix; the sources provide no evidence that replacing a cable, wireless adapter, head unit, antenna, signal booster, or phone accessory will restore the icon.
