1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAzure DevOps tracks estimates and remaining work on work items, but Microsoft’s guidance points to Marketplace extensions or custom development for dedicated time entry, timers, and timesheets. If you need a record of hours people actually worked, you will almost certainly add a tool. The choice depends on what you need to record, who enters it, and whether the hours feed billing, payroll, or an external time system.
What Azure DevOps records natively
Work tracking in Azure DevOps is configurable at the project, team, permission, and process levels. Teams can customize process fields, work item types, and workflows, and Microsoft lists Marketplace extensions and custom development as ways to extend the experience. How far you can customize depends on the process model your organization uses.

The effort fields on work items are planning and progress values, not a time log. On Task work items, the common effort fields are Original Estimate, Remaining Work, and Completed Work. Completed Work is a running total stored on the work item. It does not record which person worked on which day, when a session started, or who changed the value. That gap is why most teams that need time records look beyond the built-in fields.
Define the requirement before choosing a tool
“Time tracking” covers several different jobs. Write down which of these you actually need:
#1 Best Overall

- Durable Office Design:Spiral binding allows the book to lay flat while thick paper reduces ink bleed making it a reliable attendance book for daily business operations
- Professional Employee Records:Designed as an employee sign in and out book this log book helps maintain clear and organized attendance records for employees contractors and teams
- Versatile Daily Use:Functions as a daily log book for work suitable for offices job sites warehouses schools and small businesses needing consistent time tracking
- A timer started and stopped from inside the work item, or manual entry after the fact.
- Daily entries per person, including retroactive entries for earlier days.
- Approval of hours by a manager before they are final.
- An audit trail showing who entered or edited a value, and when.
- Billable versus non-billable hours and exports for invoicing.
- Forecasting or capacity views based on logged time.
- A link to an external time system, such as an existing timesheet platform or payroll process.
If the only need is to keep Completed Work and Remaining Work current on Tasks, the native fields may be enough, provided your team agrees on how they are updated. If you need any item from the list above, plan on an extension or an integration.
Installation prerequisites
Installing an extension is an organization-level decision, not a per-project one. Microsoft’s installation guide describes Marketplace and command-line installation. For the installation cases it lists, the installer must be a Project Collection Administrator or an organization owner. Users without that role can request an extension.
- Confirm you hold the Project Collection Administrator or organization owner role, or get one to install.
- Check that the users who will log time have at least Basic access, because most extensions require it.
- Confirm whether the extension is available for Azure DevOps Services only. Some extensions are not offered for Azure DevOps Server.
- Read each extension’s own compatibility information and your organization’s current extension policy before installing.
Microsoft’s Learn documentation on installing extensions states: “Extensions add new features and capabilities to your organization.” Treat that as the reason the installation controls exist: a new extension changes what everyone in the organization sees and can do.

7pace Timetracker
7pace’s Microsoft Marketplace listing is specifically about time tracking in Azure DevOps. It describes timers inside work items, reporting widgets, timesheet views, standardized company rules, an approval workflow, and forecasting. The listing states that the product includes a free trial; trial length and limits may vary, so confirm them on the listing before you start. The listing also states that the vendor has over 3,000 customers. That figure is the vendor’s own statement, the listing gives no year or measurement date, and it has not been independently verified.
Time Tracker Logger
This extension is built around daily entries. Users log time against a work item for a given day, add notes, and the extension keeps an audit history of changes. Reports can be filtered by date, project, work item type, and user, and exported to CSV. Because entries are per day rather than a running total, it fits teams that reconcile hours against a calendar. Check the listing’s data and access model and the read and write permissions it requires, and confirm that the supported item types match your work.

Actual Effort Tracking
Actual Effort Tracking uses Start, Pause, and Complete timers on Task work items and also supports manual retroactive entry with an audit history and approval settings. It updates Completed Work and Remaining Work on the Task automatically. That is useful when you want the native fields to reflect actual effort, but it changes values your team may already maintain by hand. Decide in advance how existing estimates will be handled, and check how the automatic updates appear in any reports you rely on. If your tracking needs extend beyond Tasks, confirm that Task-only support will not block you.

The Marketplace copy describes entry from the work item, a monthly calendar, cross-project reports, CSV export, and storage in the Microsoft-hosted Extension Data Service. It states compatibility with Azure DevOps Services and with Server 2020 and later. These are publisher claims. Confirm the current listing, its privacy statement, and its compatibility with your version before you rely on them.
TimeCamp integration
TimeCamp takes a different approach. Instead of a Marketplace extension that lives inside work items, TimeCamp lets you select Azure DevOps projects for synchronization and track imported items through its web timesheet, desktop and mobile apps, or an Azure DevOps plugin. This suits teams that already use TimeCamp or want time entry outside the Azure DevOps interface. The vendor’s documentation describes the workflow; it is not an independent security review, so assess access, data synchronization, and reporting against your own requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verification steps before you commit
- Confirm your Azure DevOps deployment (Services or Server) and the version the extension supports.
- Confirm who can install extensions in your organization and which users need Basic access.
- Decide whether time must be entered by timer, by day, or both, and whether retroactive entry must be allowed.
- Test the approval flow with a small group. Check whether approved hours can still be changed and how changes are recorded.
- Export a report and check that the columns, totals, and time zones match what finance or payroll expects.
- Check where the time data is stored and who can read it, using the extension’s own privacy and data documentation.
- Check current pricing and trial terms on the listing or vendor site on the day you decide, because these change.
Figures and sources
The only named customer figure in the sources reviewed is the 7pace claim described above, which should be attributed to 7pace. No independent statistic on Azure DevOps time tracking, adoption, productivity, or pricing was established, so none is cited here.
