A manufacturing time clock should do more than record when someone arrives and leaves if payroll depends on shifts, overtime, job assignments, or department codes. The term can mean the physical clock employees use, the attendance software behind it, or a broader workforce or manufacturing platform that connects labor records to other systems. The right choice depends on your work rules, site conditions, and existing payroll and ERP setup.
What a manufacturing time clock needs to handle
Start with the work and payroll data the system must capture. A basic attendance tool records punches; a manufacturing-focused setup may also need to associate time with shifts, overtime, jobs, lines, departments, or tasks, then send usable records to payroll.

- Attendance and exceptions: Record punches and provide a way to identify or resolve missed punches and other exceptions.
- Schedules and rules: Support the shift patterns, overtime calculations, and other timekeeping rules your payroll process actually uses.
- Labor allocation: Determine whether employees need to charge time to a job, line, department, or task, especially when assignments change during a shift.
- Payroll and operational data: Confirm what information moves to payroll, HR, ERP, or plant-floor systems, and whether the connection is suitable for your workflow.
- Reports and administration: Check whether managers can review attendance and labor data across departments or locations.
These are common categories to evaluate, not guarantees of any particular product. Fareclock describes scheduling, job costing, reporting, and payroll synchronization; TCP Software describes job codes, overtime, and timekeeping rules; and Infor lists time and attendance and labor data collection within Factory Track. Physical terminals with attendance software
Employees punch at a fixed terminal, which may use a PIN, badge, fingerprint, or another verification method. This can suit a facility where workers need a shared, on-site clocking point. Check device durability and placement, how the terminal handles connectivity interruptions, and whether its software supports your rules and payroll connection.
Cloud attendance with mobile or kiosk clocking
Some systems support mobile clocking or a shared kiosk rather than requiring a dedicated terminal at every point. This can provide flexibility across sites or work areas, but the appropriate method depends on where employees are permitted to clock in and what identity checks and device controls the employer requires.

Manufacturing or ERP-connected labor tracking
A wider platform may connect time and attendance with manufacturing operations or ERP workflows. Infor Factory Track, for example, describes time and attendance as part of its manufacturing automation modules. That category may be relevant when labor data must fit into existing operational systems, but the product page alone does not establish that a particular integration will work with your configuration. | Comparison area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Clocking method | Fixed terminal, biometric device, mobile punch, or kiosk; confirm which methods are supported and appropriate at each site. |
| Identity and device fit | Available verification options, device suitability for the environment, and any location-specific compatibility requirements. |
| Time rules | Shift schedules, overtime, exceptions, and the work rules or agreements that payroll applies. |
| Job and department costing | Whether employees can charge time to the required job, line, department, or task, including when assignments change mid-shift. |
| Integration | How records reach your payroll, HR, ERP, or plant-floor systems; identify what data transfers and what needs manual handling. |
| Multi-site administration | Whether managers can administer locations and apply the correct rules without confusing site-specific settings. |
TCP describes mix-and-match clocks, fingerprint scanning, job codes, and timekeeping rules. Zebra describes time entry, labor tracking, payroll integration, and touchless options. Run realistic scenarios in a vendor demonstration
- A worker forgets to punch in or out. How is the exception flagged, corrected, and approved?
- A worker moves from one job, line, or department to another mid-shift. Can the time be allocated correctly?
- A shift crosses a boundary that affects overtime or a payroll rule. Can the system apply your configuration and show the resulting record?
- A site loses connectivity or uses a different clocking method. What happens to punches and how are they reconciled?
- Payroll receives a record that needs correction. Can you trace the change and determine what is sent again?
These scenarios help expose gaps between a listed feature and the way your plant operates. The sources cited here do not provide comparative testing, accuracy measurements, or evidence that one vendor is superior.

What biometric clocking does—and does not—tell you
A biometric employee time clock is one hardware category to consider when evaluating identity verification. TCP and biotime describe biometric time-clock options for manufacturing or attendance use, but that does not establish that a particular device is right for a given facility. Confirm the terminal’s software, payroll and regional compatibility, operating conditions, and the employer’s applicable rules before selecting hardware. TCP Software and biotime
