The Sony K-55XR50 is a 55-inch 4K LCD television with a Mini LED backlight, local dimming and a native 120 Hz panel. Its specifications make it a strong fit on paper for bright-room HDR and console gaming, but buyers should plan around a key connection limit: family-review evidence indicates that only two of its four HDMI inputs support the full gaming feature set. The available independent reviews tested 65-inch BRAVIA 5 sets, not this 55-inch model, so their picture and sound impressions are useful context rather than direct test results for the K-55XR50.
What is the Sony K-55XR50?
The K-55XR50 is the 55-inch version of Sony’s 2025 BRAVIA 5 LCD television. Sony specifies a 54.6-inch measured diagonal, 3840 × 2160 resolution, a native 120 Hz refresh rate, Mini LED backlighting and local dimming. Those specifications put it in the premium LCD category: it uses a backlit LCD panel rather than OLED’s self-emissive pixels.

Sony lists its XR Processor and XR Motion Clarity, along with Professional, Cinema, Dolby Vision, FPS game and RTS game picture modes. These are processing and mode features, not independent evidence of how the exact 55-inch set performs in a room. Sony’s K-55XR50 specifications are the primary source for the model-specific details.

Mini LED backlighting and local dimming let the TV control brightness across areas of the screen, which can improve perceived contrast in HDR scenes compared with an LCD that has less capable backlighting. The trade-off inherent to local dimming is that bright objects against dark backgrounds can reveal blooming, and the result depends on the panel, dimming implementation and viewing conditions. Sony does not publish a local-dimming-zone count for the K-55XR50 on its specification page.

TechRadar and What Hi-Fi? reviewed the 65-inch K65XR55, not the K-55XR50. TechRadar praised that larger set’s contrast, color, sharpness and local-dimming control, while noting that the step-up BRAVIA 7 offers more dimming zones and higher brightness. TechRadar measured nearly 900 nits on a 10% HDR window and 595 nits on a full-screen 100% HDR window on its 65-inch test unit; those figures are not measurements of the 55-inch model. What Hi-Fi? counted roughly 240 dimming zones on its 65-inch unit, a reviewer observation rather than a Sony-published specification. TechRadar’s BRAVIA 5 review and What Hi-Fi?’s BRAVIA 5 review provide family-level context, not direct K-55XR50 test results.
HDR formats
Sony lists HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision compatibility. That covers major HDR formats, including Dolby Vision support for compatible content. Format support alone does not establish peak brightness, tone mapping quality or how much visible HDR impact the 55-inch set delivers in a particular room.
Gaming: 4K at 120 Hz, but check your port plan
Sony lists four HDMI inputs and the HDMI 2.1 features 4K120, variable refresh rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), eARC and Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM). It also lists PS5 Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. These features make the K-55XR50 relevant to current consoles, but the number of ports matters when a system includes more than one console, a gaming PC, an eARC soundbar or another high-bandwidth device.

TechRadar’s review of the 65-inch K65XR55 says only two of the four HDMI inputs provide the full gaming feature set. The reviewer also reports that its tested set supports 4K/120 Hz and VRR but lacks AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync. Treat those as observations about the reviewed family unit, not confirmed results for the exact 55-inch model. Before buying, check the K-55XR50 manual and port labels to confirm which inputs support the features your devices require. Plan to connect eARC audio to the designated eARC input; doing so may occupy one of the inputs you want for gaming.
Check connections before installation
- List the devices that need 4K/120 Hz, VRR or ALLM, including consoles and any gaming PC.
- Check the K-55XR50 manual and the markings beside the HDMI inputs to identify the ports that support the required features and the eARC connection.
- Assign those limited-feature ports to the devices that need them most. If your planned setup needs more full-featured inputs than the TV provides, compare alternatives or consider whether an appropriate receiver or switch suits your devices and requirements.
Smart TV features and connectivity
The K-55XR50 runs Google TV and includes Chromecast, Apple AirPlay, Apple HomeKit and Bluetooth 5.3, according to Sony. That gives households options for app-based viewing, casting and integrating Apple devices. Availability of individual apps and services can vary by country and may change over time.
Built-in sound: supported formats are not the same as bass
Sony specifies two full-range bass-reflex speakers and two tweeters, with four 10 W outputs (10 W + 10 W + 10 W + 10 W). The set supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and Acoustic Center Sync can pair it with a compatible Sony soundbar. TechRadar described sound from its 65-inch review unit as clean and detailed but relatively light in bass. That is a reason for bass-sensitive viewers to audition the set or budget for a soundbar, not proof that every buyer will need one.

Setup and wall mounting
Sony lists a 300 × 300 mm VESA mounting pattern. The wall-mount bracket is an optional accessory, with availability dependent on the country selected on Sony’s product page. If you use a third-party mount, confirm the VESA pattern, the mount’s load rating, the correct screws and clearance for the exact mount and installation. The box contents listed by Sony include a table-top stand, voice remote, batteries, AC power cord, operating instructions and a quick setup guide.

TechRadar reported a 55-inch launch price of $1,399.99 / £1,299 / AU$1,999 and a July 2025 release date. That is historical launch pricing, not a current offer. Current price, stock and local availability have not been established here, so the value case depends on the price you can actually get in your market.

Compare the K-55XR50 against TVs of a similar size and current local price rather than relying on its launch price or on 65-inch review measurements. Give particular weight to:
- Whether you want LCD Mini LED with local dimming or prefer an OLED panel.
- Independent measurements of brightness and reflection handling for the exact size or model being compared.
- Local-dimming behavior, HDR format support and the viewing angles your room requires.
- How many HDMI inputs support the gaming features your devices need, including whether eARC takes one of those ports.
- Native refresh rate, built-in audio and any soundbar you may want to add.
TechRadar compared the BRAVIA 5 family with the TCL C7K, LG C5 and Samsung QN90F in its 65-inch review. Those comparisons concern 65-inch products, so they are not a direct 55-inch value ranking.
