If you need an email app on your iPhone today, use Apple Mail. As of October 4, 2026, Thunderbird for iOS is still in development, not a generally available alternative. Thunderbird’s October 1 update aims for community testing in the next few months, but does not set a public release date. Until there is a build to try, the fair comparison is Apple Mail’s documented features versus Thunderbird’s stated plans—not two finished apps.
Availability: Apple Mail is the choice you can use now
Apple documents Mail as an available iPhone app with support instructions for setting up accounts, managing messages, composing and scheduling email, and adjusting privacy and inbox settings. Thunderbird’s official October 1, 2026 development update describes an app being built natively from scratch and says previews are works in progress: “Nothing is final.” Its goal is to have a first version ready for community testing “in the next few months,” which is not a guaranteed release date. That distinction matters: Thunderbird’s planned setup flow, sync, inbox and rich-text editor are not verified features of a finished app. The comparison below treats them as development work, not as capabilities you can rely on.
What Apple Mail can do on iPhone now
Accounts and sending
Mail can hold multiple email accounts, show messages together, and let you choose which account to send from. Apple documents automatic setup for common providers including iCloud, Google, Microsoft Exchange and Yahoo, plus manual setup for other providers. The account’s provider and configuration determine which functions are available. Add an email account to your iPhone

Reading, composing and inbox controls
Apple documents message formatting, signatures, conversation threading, message-list settings, swipe actions, customizable notifications and an Undo Send delay of up to 30 seconds. Signatures in Mail are text-only. You can also schedule a message with Send Later. These are documented controls; how useful they are depends on your account and workflow. Fetch when push is unavailable
For accounts without push support, Apple lets you configure how often Mail fetches new data. The default “Automatically” schedule downloads new data when iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi; it should not be read as a guarantee of immediate delivery in every situation. Fetch email on iPhone

Categories and newer features
Mail can categorize messages into Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions, but automatic categorization is not available in all countries or regions. Apple’s iOS 27 guide also describes Primary-message reminders and Apple Intelligence suggestions. Those features have device, language, region and software requirements, so they are not universal reasons to choose Mail. Apple says message categorization is processed entirely on device. What is known—and not yet established—about Thunderbird for iOS
Thunderbird’s July 23, 2026 iOS roadmap lists the full email reading and writing experience as active work, with connecting the protocol and database to render email as the next step. The roadmap says IMAP framework work is completed and JMAP support is being explored; it also says the first user release is being prioritized. These roadmap statements describe project status, not a finished user-facing feature set. Thunderbird iOS roadmap (updated July 23, 2026)

A July 30 development report discusses work on the compose screen, account drawer, OAuth and rich-text editing. The October 1 first look describes account setup for providers such as Google and Microsoft, background sync and an inbox layout. Together, these updates show direction, but they do not establish that real accounts can be set up, that background notifications or sync behave as intended, or that users can install a generally available release. The 2026 mobile roadmap puts account creation and IMAP first, followed by the full read/write experience; JMAP, HTML signatures, swipe actions and calendar exploration appear as later priorities. As a plan, it may not match the eventual release sequence. Thunderbird 2026 mobile roadmap

Privacy: Apple documents protections; a Thunderbird verdict must wait
Apple says Mail Privacy Protection is designed to limit what email senders can learn about Mail activity. With the protection enabled, remote content is downloaded in the background by default and routed through two separate relays, designed so that neither relay alone has both the user’s IP address and the third-party Mail content. Users can turn the protections off in settings. This is Apple’s description of its feature, not an independent audit or a promise that every form of email tracking is prevented. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe official Thunderbird iOS materials available as of October 4, 2026 do not establish comparable, shipped privacy behavior. That is a reason to reserve judgment—not evidence that Thunderbird lacks privacy protections or that Apple is categorically more private.
