A person’s use of “just a few taps” is not enough to identify the right AAC app. It may describe the messages they communicate today, a preference for quick choices, difficulty making accurate movements, or a need to reach certain messages easily. Choose by matching the person’s access, communication needs, settings and preferences—and trial the system with them in everyday situations.

Start with what “a few taps” means for this person

Before comparing apps, find out how the person communicates now and what they need to communicate across their day. A small number of selections in one situation does not establish that someone needs a small vocabulary, a simple display or a particular grid size. Nor should today’s setup place a ceiling on what the system can support as the person learns.

Consider their language and literacy, vision, hearing, sensory and motor profile, motivation, current communication methods, and the people and supports available to help them use the system. Include communication partners in planning, but involve the AAC user directly in choices and trials.

Match the access method to reliable selection

Access is how the person makes a choice in the system. An app’s features matter only if the person can reach and select them reliably.

Direct selection

With direct selection, the person chooses an item directly—for example, by touching it or using another movement or signal. Touch can be fast, but it may require precise movement. Assess whether the person can select intended targets consistently, not just whether they can tap the screen occasionally.

Indirect selection or scanning

With scanning, choices are presented in sequence and the person indicates a selection through an agreed movement, vocalization or switch. It may require less fine-motor control than direct touch, but it adds intermediary steps. Whether that trade-off helps depends on the individual’s access and trial results.

What to compare Questions to ask
Access and accuracy Can the person select reliably using touch, scanning or another input? Would positioning or an accessory change access?
Language and communication Does the system offer useful vocabulary, an appropriate symbol type and number, and ways to communicate different functions? Is written communication relevant?
Display and speech Can the person see and use the display? Does the speech output or voice work for them and their communication partners?
Flexibility and growth Can vocabulary and system features change as the person’s abilities and needs change?
Everyday fit Can it be used in the person’s settings and with their communication partners? Does the person prefer it and feel motivated to use it? Is it portable enough for those settings?
Practical support Can the person and their supporters manage affordability and maintenance? Is support available, and is there a backup way to communicate?

These factors reflect ASHA’s AAC Practice Portal and the National Joint Committee’s guidance on augmentative and alternative communication. No one item, such as a preferred symbol set or quick access to a few messages, answers the full matching question.

Trial candidates in real communication situations

Use real opportunities to communicate rather than relying only on a feature list or demonstration. Have the AAC user try candidate systems with the people and in the settings where they need to communicate. Notice whether they can access intended choices, whether the available language serves different communication functions, and whether they want to use the system.

Use what happens in trials to adjust the match. Selection is an ongoing process: a system that works for current needs should also be modifiable as communication develops. ASHA’s National Joint Committee emphasizes individualized AAC decision-making; its guidance does not support inferring a suitable app, grid size, vocabulary or access method from “few taps” alone.

Plan for positioning and continued access

Some people may benefit from positioning changes or accessories such as a mount or switch, depending on their access and positioning needs. These are options to evaluate with the actual device and individual—not standard requirements.

Also plan how the person can communicate if the primary system is unavailable. ASHA says people who use AAC should always have access to their communication tools or devices and describes partner-assisted scanning as a possible alternative when a primary system is unavailable, or when someone does not have an established alternative access method. A backup plan should preserve a way to communicate rather than assume the main device will always be at hand.
