To remove a Mac app and stop it from launching or working in the background, first use the app developer’s uninstaller if one is provided. Otherwise, delete the app through Finder or Launchpad, then check System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions for both startup entries and background activity. These are separate controls, so check each one.
Choose the right removal method
Where you got the app and whether it has its own uninstaller determine the safest route. Apple recommends the developer’s uninstaller when available because related login items, extensions, or data may be stored outside the app itself. See Apple’s instructions for deleting or uninstalling Mac apps.

| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| The app includes a developer uninstaller or removal option | Use it first and follow its prompts. |
| The app came from the App Store and has a Delete button in Launchpad | Delete it in Launchpad. |
| The app came from another source, or Launchpad does not offer Delete | Remove it in Finder. |
| The app is required by macOS | Do not try to remove it through Finder; macOS protects required apps. |
Uninstall the app
- Quit the app. If it is open, quit it before removal. If macOS says it is in use, make sure it is closed; restarting or starting in Safe Mode may help if it remains locked.
- Check for the developer’s removal tool. Look in the app’s folder and menus or settings for an uninstaller or remove option. Run it before manually deleting the app.
- For an App Store app, use Launchpad when Delete is available. Open Launchpad, locate the app, and use its Delete control.
- For other apps, use Finder. Locate the app, usually in Applications or your user Applications folder, and move it to Trash. Empty Trash to delete it permanently.
Apple’s separate Mac app uninstall instructions also describe the developer-uninstaller-first approach and the Finder and Launchpad options.

Deleting the app and stopping its automatic activity are related but distinct tasks. Open at Login controls whether an item launches when you sign in. App Background Activity allows an app to do work while it is not open, such as checking for updates or syncing.

- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Apple documents these controls in its Login Items & Extensions settings guide.
- Under Open at Login, select the app’s entry, if present, and remove it using the remove control.
- Review App Background Activity separately. Turn off the app’s permission if you do not want it to perform background tasks. Disabling this may stop expected functions such as syncing or update checks.
If the developer’s uninstaller has already removed related entries, they may no longer appear here. Do not assume that every app has the same helper files or that manual cleanup is required.
Check whether helper activity remains
Some apps use helper executables or services managed separately from the main app bundle. Apple’s deployment documentation explains login items, launch agents, launch daemons, and the app-bundle helper structure used on macOS 13 and later. For advanced inspection, Apple identifies sfltool dumpbtm as a command that prints login and background item status; see Apple’s guide to managing login items and background tasks.

This command is for inspection, not a reason to delete unfamiliar files. Avoid removing items from system folders by guesswork; use the app developer’s removal instructions if an identified helper needs further cleanup.
Verify after restarting or signing in
Restart your Mac or sign out and back in, then check whether the app opens or continues doing the activity you disabled. If it still opens, review Login Items again and check the app’s own settings or documentation. Apple notes that other software can cause an app to keep reopening; its guide to preventing apps and windows from reopening covers that behavior.

If you are troubleshooting a broader startup problem rather than uninstalling one app, Apple’s diagnostic method is to record existing login items, remove them, restart, and add them back one at a time to identify the problematic item. That is a troubleshooting procedure, not a required uninstall step; see Apple’s login-item troubleshooting instructions.

What uninstalling does not remove
- Your documents: Files you created with the app are separate and are not removed with the app. You may need the app to open or convert them.
- A subscription: Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription purchased with it. Cancel it separately through the relevant account or billing service.
- Required macOS software: Finder cannot remove apps that macOS requires, including many built-in apps and items in the System folder.
