Check the quote’s status and timestamp, then distinguish a scheduled market closure, a halt, delayed data, and a feed problem. Whether you can place an order while data is stale depends on your broker and the app’s rules; a displayed price does not guarantee an execution price.
First, identify why the quote is not updating
“Stale” is a product label for data that no longer meets an app’s freshness policy. It does not explain the cause by itself. Look for a status label, timestamp, market-hours notice, or connection warning before taking action.

The explanations above reflect provider- and market-specific behavior, not one universal convention. For example, the IBKR API’s delayed and frozen modes are distinct from a market halt, while Cboe feed documentation describes feed-specific heartbeat and message-sequence signals.

- Read the status and timestamp. Look for “Live,” “Delayed,” “Frozen,” “No current quote,” a halt notice, or a connection warning. If the app does not show a status or a usable timestamp, treat the price as unverified rather than assuming it is live.
- Check the instrument and session. Confirm that you selected the right security and that its market is open. A closed session, delayed opening, or halt can explain why ordinary updates are absent.
- Check the app and provider connection. If the app reports a feed or connection problem, follow its reconnect or refresh instructions. Do not use a refreshed screen as proof of current data unless the app confirms that the feed has recovered.
- Consult your broker’s notices or support if the state is unclear. Ask whether your account has the necessary data entitlement, whether the quote is delayed, and what the broker does with orders while current data is unavailable.
- Decide whether to wait or proceed based on the broker’s order rules—not the last displayed price. If you cannot establish the quote’s state or understand how an order will be handled, waiting for confirmation avoids relying on an unverified value.
Can you place an order when the price is stale?
There is no single answer for every trading app. A broker may block an order, accept it, queue it, or route it under its own rules and system design. The app should explain the applicable behavior at order entry; do not assume that a stale quote automatically cancels an order or that an accepted order will execute at the displayed price.

A halt is different: FINRA says trading is prohibited while an applicable halt is in effect. For pending or new orders, consult the broker’s instructions and status messages. FINRA’s Regulatory Notice 21-12 (2021) emphasizes that order-handling disclosures matter, particularly for investors accustomed to rapid executions. It also warns that high volume can delay executions and that execution prices can differ materially from displayed prices.
How an app should communicate missing or stale data
Label the data state and show its time
Pair a clear status—such as “Live,” “Delayed,” “Frozen,” or “No current quote”—with the quote timestamp. Show the provider-reported delay when one is available. Do not rely on color alone, and do not style a frozen value like a current executable quote. Use labels that match the provider’s actual data modes.

Separate market status from feed health
Show a known halt or delayed opening as an instrument or market-status event, not as a generic connection error. Show provider or system degradation separately. If the app cannot confirm the market status, say that it is unavailable instead of guessing.

Explain order consequences where the user acts
At order entry, tell the user whether the app will block, accept, queue, or route an order under the relevant conditions, according to the broker’s actual rules. Explain any limits on what the displayed quote tells them about a possible execution. FINRA guidance calls for clear information about halts and order handling, especially when execution may be delayed.

How app teams can detect and recover from a feed interruption
Monitor the feed’s own health signals
Track the last received message time, provider or event time when available, heartbeat responses, and sequence continuity. Follow the vendor’s definitions for a missed heartbeat, disconnection, or unresolved sequence gap instead of inferring freshness from an open socket. Cboe’s feed specification documents provider-specific heartbeat and sequence behavior.
Reconcile data before clearing a warning
After reconnecting or detecting a gap, use the provider’s documented replay, snapshot, or resubscription procedure if one exists. Reconcile the recovered state before marking the feed healthy. Cboe’s specification supplies feed-specific integrity signals, but the reviewed materials do not establish one recovery algorithm for all providers.

Account for exchange-side safeguards without assuming they are universal
A SEC-hosted Cboe filing describes heartbeat responses and automatic logoff, with quote cancellation in applicable circumstances, as measures intended to mitigate communication-loss and stale-quote risks. Those are examples of exchange-side mechanisms, not a universal client requirement or a guarantee that every stale quote will be cancelled.
How to set a stale-data threshold
No universal stale-age threshold is established by the sources cited here for all instruments, providers, and trading sessions. Choose and document a threshold based on the provider’s service, the instrument, the session, and how the app uses the data. Treat that value as product policy unless a specific rule or contract establishes a different requirement.

- Define how the app handles delayed, frozen, missing, disconnected, and halted states separately.
- Use the provider’s documented heartbeat, sequencing, and recovery behavior to assess feed health.
- Test that the app presents each state correctly, including after a reconnect or data gap.
- Make the order-entry behavior and relevant status visible when the user needs to act.
