The words alone do not tell you what was tested, which product or lot was covered, or whether testing continues. A certification mark can provide more detail, but neither testing nor certification proves that a supplement works or is right for you.
What does “third-party tested” mean?
It means an organization outside the manufacturer performed testing, but the phrase has no single universal definition established by the sources cited here. A claim may refer to checking an ingredient’s identity, the amount shown on the label, contaminants, or a limited list of substances. It does not, by itself, identify the tester, the sample or lot, the test scope, the pass criteria, or whether testing is repeated.

Before relying on the claim, look for answers to these questions:

- Who tested it? FDA names ConsumerLab, NSF International, and USP among independent organizations offering quality testing; that listing is not an FDA endorsement. See the FDA’s consumer education on dietary supplements.
- What exact product and sample were tested? A result for one product or sample does not necessarily cover another formulation or every production lot.
- What was tested, and against what criteria? Testing for ingredient identity is not the same as testing for label amounts, contaminants, or banned substances.
- Is testing ongoing? One test does not establish continuing conformity. Look for details about repeat or off-the-shelf checks and lot coverage.
How is certification different?
Certification or verification ties a mark to a named program and its stated criteria, which can make the claim more specific than a bare “third-party tested” statement. But the word “certified” is not enough on its own: programs—and even different marks from the same organization—can cover different things.

A manufacturing-quality audit, a finished-product certification, and screening for substances prohibited in sport are distinct scopes. A mark may address one or more of them; it does not establish clinical effectiveness, personal suitability, or the absence of every possible contaminant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says in Science and Our Food Supply: Examining Dietary Supplements, “These seals do not guarantee that a product is safe or effective.”
What USP Verified and NSF programs cover
USP Verified
USP describes its Dietary Supplement Verification Program as including a manufacturing-facility audit for compliance with USP General Chapter <2750> and FDA current good manufacturing practices in 21 CFR Part 111; review of quality-control and manufacturing records; laboratory testing against applicable USP–NF, pharmacopeial, or manufacturer specifications; and off-the-shelf product testing to check continuing conformance. Because this is a product-level program, check the USP program information and participant list for the exact product rather than assuming an entire brand or product line qualifies.

NSF certification and Certified for Sport
NSF describes several dietary-supplement scopes. GMP certification principally concerns manufacturing quality systems, while product certification involves product review and testing. NSF Certified for Sport adds screening for substances prohibited by athletic organizations. NSF describes product testing, formulation and label review, production-facility and supplier inspections, and ongoing monitoring for that sports-focused program. Its current Certified for Sport information says the program tests for 290 banned substances; the list and criteria can change, so check the current program details and product database rather than relying on an old figure or a generic NSF mark.
A generic NSF GMP claim does not mean a product is NSF Certified for Sport. Confirm the exact mark and program scope in NSF’s dietary supplements and functional foods FAQs.

How to check a supplement’s claim
- Match the exact product. Compare the product name and formulation on the package with the certifier’s current directory listing. A listing or report for one product does not automatically cover another from the same brand.
- Identify the organization and program. Search the USP participant list or NSF database; do not treat a logo or vague claim as confirmation by itself.
- Read the scope. Check whether the program covers ingredient identity, label amounts, contaminants, manufacturing systems, banned substances, or some combination. Choose a scope relevant to your concern; athletes may need banned-substance screening.
- Check sample and monitoring details. Find out whether evidence relates to a particular lot and whether the program conducts repeat checks. USP describes off-the-shelf testing; NSF describes ongoing monitoring, and its sports program database identifies products tested on a lot-by-lot basis.
- Read the full label. Review Supplement Facts and other label information rather than treating a quality mark as a substitute for them.
What FDA oversight does—and does not—mean
In the United States, dietary supplements do not undergo the same premarket approval for safety and effectiveness as drugs. FDA says it does not approve supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed and does not test them before sale. Manufacturers and distributors have initial responsibility for meeting legal requirements; FDA can take action against adulterated or misbranded products after they reach the market. FDA dietary-supplement good manufacturing practice rules are intended to help ensure identity, purity, strength, and composition, and to reduce problems such as contamination, wrong ingredients, or improper packaging and labeling. GMP compliance and voluntary product certification are different claims; check which one a particular mark represents. Neither is FDA approval of the supplement.

Does a certified supplement make sense for you?
A certification can help you evaluate a product against a defined quality or screening program, but it cannot decide whether taking that supplement is medically appropriate. FDA advises consulting a healthcare professional before deciding to purchase or use a supplement. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about suitability, especially if you take medicines or manage a health condition; supplements can carry health risks and interact with medicines or medical conditions.
