First protect yourself, then stabilize the book. Keep people away from active mold, isolate affected books, and do not treat sewage-contaminated water as a routine spill. For a newly wet book from a clean-water accident, start air-drying promptly; if it cannot be dried within two days, freezing may prevent further damage while you arrange appropriate help. Smoke odor and soot need different treatments, and valuable or fragile books are best assessed by a conservator.
What to do first: protect people and stop the damage
- Check the water source. If the book was exposed to sewage or other potentially hazardous water, do not handle it as an ordinary clean-water accident. Avoid unnecessary contact and seek professional advice.
- Look for active mold. Wet or furry growth may be active. Do not brush, vacuum, or otherwise disturb it. Isolate the book from unaffected items and take appropriate precautions; see the Library of Congress mold guidance.
- Stabilize the book. For a clean-water accident, begin drying as soon as possible. Keep the area cool, reduce humidity, and improve air circulation without directing a fan at the book.
- Decide whether to call a conservator. Get professional advice for an irreplaceable or valuable book, widespread damage, fragile pages, active mold, or uncertainty about safe handling. The Library of Congress notes that conservation work is time-consuming and costly when done correctly.
The goal is to prevent further damage and, when water is involved, reduce the chance of mold growth. A book exposed to contaminated water or active mold raises safety concerns beyond ordinary household cleanup.

How to dry a book wet by clean water
For one wet book
The Canadian Conservation Institute advises gently fanning the book open and standing it on absorbent material. Replace the material as it becomes wet, and turn the book upside down as it dries. Keep heat low, lower the room’s humidity if possible, and increase air circulation; a fan can help if it is not pointed directly at the book. Follow the Institute’s Basic Care – Books guidance.
Do not force pages apart or apply direct heat. Drying can leave a book changed in shape or size, particularly after substantial water damage. If the book is valuable, fragile, or badly soaked, ask a conservator before attempting more involved treatment.

If drying within two days is not possible
The Library of Congress advises preparing and freezing newly wet books if they cannot be air-dried within two days. Freezing is a way to stabilize wet material while further treatment is arranged; it is not the same as completing the drying process. For collections, the Canadian Conservation Institute identifies professional freeze-drying as the preferred option, handled by paper conservators. What to do about mold on a book
If growth is wet or furry
Treat suspected active mold as a containment and safety issue, not simply a stain. Do not disturb or brush it off. Separate the affected book from other materials and control the environment. The Library of Congress says active mold should not be disturbed; an experienced conservator may be needed. The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that mold can begin growing within 24 hours after a book gets wet, a general risk statement rather than a prediction for every room or book.

If the mold is dry or dormant
Dry mold still calls for care and isolation. Do not use an ordinary household vacuum: without suitable filtration and containment, vacuuming can spread spores. Conservation guidance describes HEPA-filter vacuuming for dry mold on book edges and covers, along with inspection of the inside and outside covers, spine, and text block. This is not a blanket recommendation for do-it-yourself cleaning of valuable books.

Mold can weaken paper and boards; affected pages need individual assessment. For a valuable, fragile, or extensively affected book, consult a conservator rather than trying to clean the text block at home. How to handle smoke odor and soot
For lingering smoke odor
Odor can remain after visible debris is gone. The Library of Congress suggests gently dusting with a clean, soft cosmetic brush or magnetic dusting cloth, then exposing more of the book’s surface to air. Another option is to place the book in a closed container with activated charcoal or baking soda for several days. Keep the absorber from touching the book and check the book daily for mold. These steps address odor, not soot embedded in paper.
For visible soot
Soot may contain oily material, and rubbing can drive it further into paper. The Library of Congress’s smoke and soot guidance describes low-suction HEPA vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, moving straight up and down rather than dragging across the surface; a flexible screen can shield fragile material. It also advises wearing latex or nitrile gloves and blotting, not rubbing, with a vulcanized rubber sponge (sometimes called a cosmetic sponge). Because soot removal can damage an item, treat these as conservation procedures rather than a routine cleaning recipe. Unique, fragile, or irreplaceable books should go to a conservator.

Should you treat, keep, or replace the book?
Make the decision after immediate stabilization, based on both the book’s importance and the likely extent of damage. A conservator can help when the book is rare, sentimental, valuable, structurally compromised, or affected by mold or soot. For a replaceable book, compare the expected treatment cost and outcome with the cost of replacement. If an infrequently used collector’s item has limited value, leaving it as-is, boxing it, and improving its storage may be preferable to unnecessary intervention.

- Active mold or contaminated water: prioritize safety, isolation, and professional advice.
- One book, clean water, limited damage: prompt, gentle air-drying may be appropriate.
- Large numbers of wet books or drying delays: freezing and professional freeze-drying may be more practical than trying to dry everything in place.
- Valuable, unique, or badly damaged book: consult a book or paper conservator before cleaning or discarding it.
- Replaceable book with costly treatment needs: replacement may be the more sensible option.
