The UEC European Road Championships are the continental road-cycling championships organised by the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC). National teams compete in separate women’s and men’s junior, under-23 (U23) and elite categories, with road races, individual time trials and mixed-relay team time trials on the programme. Riders are entered by their national federations; the UEC sets event-specific starting quotas, so there is no single qualification rule for every race.
The 2026 edition is scheduled around Ljubljana and Šenčur, Slovenia, from 2 to 7 October. The UEC reported 900 registered athletes from 43 countries in a preview published on 30 September 2026.

What happens at the European Road Championships?
The championships are a national-team competition in road cycling, not a club or trade-team stage race. Their programme is built around three formats: mass-start road races, individual time trials and team time trials contested as mixed relays. The 2026 schedule lists events across six gender and age categories, plus junior and elite mixed relays.

Which categories and events are included?
The 2026 programme names six categories. Road races and individual time trials are scheduled for each; mixed-relay team time trials are listed for junior and elite riders.

The UEC’s 2025 technical guide describes a mixed relay as a team time trial, with three men and three women of the same nationality on each team in that edition. That is a 2025 rule; consult the 2026 guide for the current relay composition.

The 2026 bulletin places elite road races between Ljubljana and Šenčur. The men’s U23 race starts in Ljubljana and finishes in Šenčur; the women’s U23 and junior races start and finish in or around Šenčur. Time trials and mixed relays start and finish in Šenčur. For route details, use the event’s route files rather than inferring a course from the town names.

How does qualification and entry work?
“Qualification” is best understood as a combination of national-team selection, category eligibility and event-specific entry limits. It is not one public qualifying race or one universal quota.
1. National federations select and enter riders
The UEC regulations treat the championships as national-team competition. National federations enter their riders. The 2025 technical guide describes federation registration through the UEC system, with entries confirmed by a federation official; the exact 2026 deadlines and procedure should be checked in the current regulations.

2. The UEC sets quotas by event and nation
For the 2026 elite road races, the UEC published a nation-specific quota allocation dated 1 August 2026. The number of starting places differs by nation and by men’s or women’s race. Slovenia, as host, was allocated eight riders in each elite road race, while nations not ranked in the applicable table were allocated one. The published registration window was 24 August through 21 September 2026. These figures apply to the 2026 elite road races only; check the quota document for a particular nation’s allocation.

Junior, U23 and elite are competition categories, not nationalities or event formats. Age cutoffs and exceptions are set by UCI rules and the event regulations. The exact 2026 birth-year cutoffs and junior/U23 quota restrictions are not established here, so do not use a prior edition’s rules as a substitute.
For comparison, the 2025 technical guide allowed three national entries per nation and category in junior time trials, two in U23 and elite time trials, and six in junior and U23 road races. It also included restrictions affecting some U23 riders based on prior elite championship participation and, for men, WorldTeam or ProTeam registration. These are 2025 provisions, not confirmed 2026 rules.
Where is the 2026 championship, and how many riders are taking part?
The 2026 event page lists Ljubljana, Slovenia, and dates of 2–7 October. A UEC preview published on 30 September 2026 reported 900 registered athletes from 43 countries; that is a registration count for this edition, not a typical annual total.
