A thin-film head is the magnetic transducer in a hard disk drive that reads and writes data on a rotating disk. “Thin-film” describes how the head’s functional magnetic elements and conductors are made—not the disk itself. The head assembly moves over the disk and flies just above its surface.
What a thin-film head is
The head converts between magnetic patterns on the disk and electrical signals in the drive. During writing, it creates magnetic changes in a data track; during reading, it senses the recorded pattern. The head is a component of the read/write assembly, while the disk is the separate recording medium.

The term “thin-film” refers to fabrication: magnetic elements and conductors are formed and patterned as thin layers. It does not mean that the recording surface is itself the head. IBM describes thin-film layers on the disk separately from the read/write head assembly in its account of the Winchester disk drive.
How it is made
Thin-film heads were built by forming magnetic structures and electrical conductors in patterned layers. IBM’s historical account explains that electroplating through a mask was used to pattern magnetic elements and copper conductors, as part of a manufacturing process that also depended on other inventions (IBM Research, “The Electrochemistry of Magnetic Recording”).

An earlier technical paper describes batch fabrication of single-turn heads using evaporation, plating, and photolithography, followed by dynamic read/write tests on a moving disk (“Batch Fabrication of Thin Film Magnetic Recording Heads”).
How it works inside a hard drive
- Positioning: The drive’s read/write assembly moves the head to the data area it needs to access.
- Writing: The write element produces magnetic changes on the rotating disk to record data.
- Reading: The read element senses magnetic patterns as they pass beneath the head and produces signals the drive can interpret.
- Flying above the disk: The head does not normally rest on the recording surface while operating. It flies just above it as the disk rotates (IBM’s hard disk drive white paper).
How thin-film head designs changed
Early thin-film heads were inductive: the head used an inductive mechanism for recording and reading. Later designs combined magnetoresistive reading with inductive writing, using different mechanisms for the two tasks.

IBM’s historical accounts place the first commercial introduction of its electroplated, batch-fabricated heads in 1979, following development traced back to 1964. They describe integrated magnetoresistive-read/inductive-write heads as a subsequent shift introduced in 1989 (IBM history; IBM historical filing). These dates are milestones in IBM’s account, not a description of every drive made in those years or of current drive architectures.

Instability in engineering studies
A 1994 IBM study examines two technical effects: write instability can produce noise after writing, while read instability can distort read pulses (IBM Research, “Read and Write Instability in Thin Film Heads”). These are engineering phenomena discussed in that study, not a consumer fault checklist or a way to diagnose a particular drive. The cited material does not establish present-day failure rates or service procedures.
