Color Gray Games developed The Case of the Golden Idol, with Playstack as publisher. It launched on Steam on October 13, 2022. The premise is straightforward: investigate 12 strange deaths, determine who each suspect is, work out the motive and identify the murder weapon.

Each incident is presented as a frozen crime scene. You inspect people, objects and details in the environment, collect relevant words and clues, then use those observations to fill in the case’s answers. The game’s official description calls it “A new kind of detective game that allows you to think and investigate freely.” That freedom is important: progress comes from forming and testing your own explanation rather than selecting a route through a conventional dialogue tree.

One conspiracy across 50 years
The 12 cases are not isolated episodes. They span 50 years and connect through the mysterious Golden Idol and a cursed aristocratic family. Early discoveries therefore become context for later deaths. The structure gives the game a long-form conspiracy while preserving the satisfaction of solving a self-contained scene.
Steam’s tags identify mystery, detective, investigation, puzzle, conspiracy, point-and-click, historical and single-player elements. Those labels describe the experience more accurately than calling it an action game: the challenge is seeing what matters, recording relationships and drawing the correct conclusion.
Reception and ways to buy it
Steam currently shows 98% positive from 6,609 English reviews in a 2026 snapshot. Recent reviews are shown separately at 93% positive from 113 reviews, so the two percentages should be read as different time windows rather than contradictory scores.

The Steam store lists the base game, complete-story and complete-edition bundles, a soundtrack and two mystery DLC packs. This is a digital PC purchase path. A physical edition is not part of the documented Steam offering, so shoppers should not assume a boxed copy is available.
What There Are No Ghosts at the Grand is trying to be
A 30-day hotel restoration story
There Are No Ghosts at the Grand comes from developer and publisher Friday Sundae. You play Chris David, who unexpectedly inherits a dilapidated English hotel. The stated premise gives Chris exactly 30 days and 30 nights to restore the building before it—or something else—claims him.
The hotel is not simply a backdrop for dialogue. Restoration is a central activity, and the game’s tools are characters in their own right. The published description includes a sand blaster, paint sprayer, furniture cannon and daisy-chain gun. During the day, these devices help renovate the hotel and nearby village; at night, they become weapons against ghosts and other supernatural threats.

Exploration, puzzles and combat around the hotel
Xbox’s published feature description adds moped travel, boat maintenance, coordinate puzzles, freely explorable spaces, memory-bubble reconstruction puzzles and furniture-based combat. That list points to a game in which you move through connected spaces, repair or modify them, interpret environmental information and defend yourself when the supernatural side of the setting becomes dangerous.
Those systems make Grand broader than a room-by-room deduction game. You may be restoring a property, traveling to the village, solving a coordinate-based problem, reconstructing a memory and fighting a ghost within the same overall campaign. The available descriptions do not establish that it uses a grid of cases with required suspect, motive and weapon answers, so it should not be presented as a mechanical equivalent of Golden Idol.
A musical mystery with an unusual tone
The game is explicitly described as “many things—including a musical.” Characters have individual songs, and dialogue choices can alter the player’s sung response. Its stated musical palette ranges from spooky ska to wartime jazz and skater punk. That gives the mystery a tone of surreal seaside whimsy and gentle horror rather than the tightly focused historical conspiracy of Golden Idol.
The story’s unanswered questions concern the hotel’s history, its former owners, the townspeople and Chris’s own buried past. The supernatural threat and the building’s history are therefore intertwined, but the developers have not yet published enough detail to describe the final deduction rules, case count or solution interface.
How the mystery formats differ
Golden Idol: evidence first, answer second
In Golden Idol, the mystery is a formal reasoning exercise. You examine a static scene, identify meaningful evidence and use it to reconstruct what happened. The explicit targets—suspect, motive and weapon—give every investigation a clear finish line. A wrong interpretation remains visible as a gap or incorrect answer, encouraging another look at the scene.
The frozen presentation also controls pacing. There is no need to chase a suspect in real time or win a combat encounter before you can think. The pressure comes from ambiguity: several people may be present, an object may have more than one possible use and a motive may only make sense after you understand the larger family conspiracy.

Grand: a mystery embedded in an adventure loop
Grand places its mystery inside restoration and exploration. The day-and-night cycle, talking tools, vehicle travel and ghost encounters are all part of the same progression. Environmental puzzles and memory reconstruction may reveal information, while combat and repairs give the player practical reasons to revisit spaces.
That design can feel more immersive for players who want to inhabit a strange place rather than remain an observer of crime scenes. It also creates uncertainty about how much of the final game will be deduction and how much will be traversal, construction or action. Until the game is released, the published material supports calling it an exploration mystery, not a confirmed detective-puzzle successor.
Atmosphere, setting and presentation
Golden Idol’s historical conspiracy
Golden Idol uses pixel-art crime scenes, historical references and a dark family conspiracy to create a focused, macabre atmosphere. The 50-year span makes the Golden Idol and aristocratic family feel larger than any single death. Its visual stillness is functional: the scene becomes a diagram you can inspect at your own pace.
This presentation suits readers who enjoy noticing a changed posture, an unusual object or a relationship implied by where people are standing. The horror is mostly conceptual and investigative. The game wants you to understand a disturbing event, not survive an extended combat sequence.
Grand’s seaside whimsy and gentle horror
Grand is built around contrast. A crumbling English hotel, ghosts and a buried personal history supply the threat, while talking tools, musical conversations and eccentric songs make the world playful. Spooky ska, wartime jazz and skater punk signal a deliberately mixed tone rather than a purely grim one.
Its first-person viewpoint and explorable spaces should make the hotel and village feel like places to inhabit. Moped travel, boat upkeep and renovation reinforce that sense of a living environment. Players who prefer a consistent, sober detective mood may find the musical comedy distracting; players who want a game that keeps changing its rules may see that mixture as the main attraction.

Steam lists There Are No Ghosts at the Grand for December 2026 and states that it is not yet available, with no user reviews. Xbox Wire has announced a 2026 release for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC, day one with Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. An August 25, 2026 report from Gematsu specifies PC Early Access through Steam and the Microsoft Store in December, followed by a later full release on Xbox Series and PC.
These announcements describe a schedule, not a guarantee. The Early Access period and the later full release are different milestones, and dates can move. No final price or physical edition is established in the available announcements, so do not make a purchase decision based on an assumed cost or boxed release.
Which game fits your preferences?
Choose Golden Idol if you want deduction above all else
- You want to inspect scenes and reason from evidence rather than fight enemies.
- You prefer explicit questions about identity, motive and weapon.
- You want a complete campaign with a known 12-case structure.
- You enjoy historical conspiracy and pixel-art presentation.
- You want to play immediately on PC instead of waiting for a future release.
Wait for Grand if you want a hybrid adventure
- You are attracted to restoring a hotel as much as solving its secrets.
- You enjoy first-person exploration, environmental puzzles and supernatural combat together.
- Talking tools, sung dialogue and an eclectic musical score sound appealing rather than distracting.
- You are comfortable with a planned Early Access launch and a later full release.
- You want a mystery involving a place, a village and the protagonist’s past, even if the final deduction structure is not yet known.
Do not choose based on the word “mystery” alone
Both games ask you to uncover hidden information, but the player actions are different. In Golden Idol, observation and inference are the central verbs. In Grand, the published loop adds restoration, movement, puzzle solving, music and combat. Someone looking for another tightly structured detective puzzle may be disappointed if they expect Grand to reproduce the 12-case format. Someone who finds static crime scenes too narrow may prefer Grand precisely because its mystery is spread through a physical world.
A practical buying decision
If you need a game this week
Pick The Case of the Golden Idol. Its release status removes the biggest uncertainty: you know the campaign exists, the investigation format is documented and thousands of English-language Steam reviews provide a substantial reception snapshot. Start with the base game if you want the original 12-case story, then consider the listed complete-story or complete-edition options and mystery DLC after deciding whether the format suits you.

If you can wait until late 2026
Wishlist There Are No Ghosts at the Grand and monitor the developer’s final launch information. The December PC Early Access plan is the earliest documented opportunity, while the full Xbox and PC release is expected later. Xbox players who already use Game Pass may have a lower-friction way to try it because Xbox Wire announced day-one availability, but the exact regional program terms should be checked when the game launches.
If you are deciding between both
They are not mutually exclusive substitutes. Play Golden Idol now for a complete deduction experience, then evaluate Grand on its own terms when it becomes available. The first game can satisfy the immediate detective-puzzle need without telling you whether the second game’s musical restoration-and-ghost-hunting experiment will work for you.
What is still unknown about Grand
Because There Are No Ghosts at the Grand has not released, several comparison points remain unsettled: its final price, the length of the completed story, the number and complexity of its deduction puzzles, the balance between renovation and combat, and how much the Early Access build will differ from the final version. Published descriptions establish the premise and major systems, but they do not establish a Golden Idol-style answer screen, a fixed case count or an equivalent review record.
That uncertainty is part of the decision. Choosing Grand now means choosing its concept and announced platforms, not a verified finished experience. Choosing Golden Idol means accepting a narrower, more deliberate format in exchange for immediate access and a documented complete game.

The Case of the Golden Idol is the better recommendation for most readers asking which mystery game to play now. It delivers the clearest detective experience: 12 connected deaths, frozen scenes, freely formed deductions and explicit answers about suspects, motives and weapons. Its release status and strong Steam reception make it the safer purchase.
There Are No Ghosts at the Grand is the more adventurous bet. Its hotel restoration, talking tools, songs, exploration, environmental puzzles and ghost combat could make it a distinctive mystery game, but its December 2026 PC timing and later full release mean you are still waiting to see how those systems come together. Buy Golden Idol for proven deduction; wait for Grand if its musical first-person premise is what you actually want.
