The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered PC Settings: Balance Graphics and Performance

Start with your target resolution and a non-Path-Traced baseline, then compare lighting and upscaling options your hardware supports. Performance varies by PC, scene, and settings.

For the best balance in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PC, start at your intended output resolution with Path Tracing off, then add heavier lighting features and compare the upscaling options available on your hardware. Keep the settings that meet your own smoothness and image-quality goals in the same game scene. There is no single preset or guaranteed frame rate: performance changes with the PC, settings, resolution, and scene.

First, make sure you are tuning the Remastered PC release

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched on September 29, 2026. CD PROJEKT RED says owners of earlier versions can upgrade for free within the same platform ecosystem; the PC release is distributed through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net. The 2026 release is distinct from the 2022 Next-Gen Update: its PC renderer is native DirectX 12 with multithreading, and it adds Path Tracing and newer upscaling options. See CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered feature announcement.

  • Install the current Remastered build and current graphics drivers before comparing settings; CD PROJEKT RED advises updating drivers.
  • An SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements. The developer notes loading and asset-streaming benefits, but does not say an SSD increases frame rate. See the current PC requirements and performance notes.
  • Windows 10 may continue to run the next update, but CD PROJEKT RED says it no longer develops or tests the game on that OS and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance.

How to tune settings without guessing at a universal preset

  1. Choose your target. Select the output resolution you actually intend to play at and a frame-rate goal that feels sustainable on your PC.
  2. Set a baseline. Begin with Path Tracing off and use the game’s conventional rendering options. Keep other settings unchanged so you have a useful point of comparison.
  3. Compare one change at a time. In the same scene, test a selected ray-traced effect or Path Tracing, then check whether the visual change is worth any loss of smoothness for you.
  4. Test the available upscaler. At your intended output resolution, compare the quality modes your game build and GPU expose. Do not assume every vendor option works on every GPU.
  5. Consider Frame Generation separately. Test it only if the option is available, and judge the result on your system rather than assuming it will improve every mode or feel.
  6. Make small adjustments to conventional settings. Change a few related options at a time, then compare the same scene again. This makes it easier to spot which change matters to your image and performance.

CD PROJEKT RED cautions that performance can vary with system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution; higher output resolution significantly affects FPS. Its stated targets are based on QA testing, not a promise for every PC, and occasional fluctuations can occur. The accessible requirements page does not provide a text-readable current benchmark table from which to quote verified GPU-specific frame rates.

Should you use rasterized rendering, ray tracing, or Path Tracing?

These options differ in how much of the scene’s lighting they affect. Conventional rendering is the sensible baseline when prioritizing a stable frame rate. Ray tracing can apply to selected effects, such as reflections or shadows. Path Tracing is a broader lighting approach: NVIDIA explains that it combines lighting and rendering into one system, using more rays and multiple light bounces. NVIDIA characterizes the distinction by saying ray tracing improves certain aspects of a scene while Path Tracing improves everything; that is NVIDIA’s explanation, not an independent performance test. See NVIDIA’s Path Tracing and DLSS 4.5 overview.

  • Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
  • Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.

The practical choice depends on your priorities and hardware. If you want a reliable starting point, leave Path Tracing off, then try the available ray-traced effects or Path Tracing in the same location and decide whether the visual difference justifies the performance tradeoff. The visual benefit is subjective, and its cost depends on the PC and settings.

Should you use DLSS, FSR, or XeSS?

Use the option your build exposes for your GPU rather than treating DLSS, FSR, and XeSS as interchangeable. The Remastered announcement lists:

  • DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction. The announcement lists this as a supported PC option.
  • FSR 4 with Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2. CD PROJEKT RED specifies Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer; unsupported GPUs use FSR 2.
  • XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency. Availability depends on the game’s exposed options and system hardware.

Compare the quality modes at the same output resolution and in the same scene. A lower internal rendering resolution with upscaling can help when native output resolution is too demanding, but the result depends on the option and mode available to your hardware. Frame Generation is also an option to evaluate, not a substitute for establishing a stable baseline; the official feature information does not establish one latency or image-quality recommendation for every GPU and mode.

Which conventional settings are worth adjusting?

The 2022 Next-Gen notes identify Ultra+ categories including background character count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water, and detail. These give you a practical checklist for controlled comparisons, but those historical notes do not rank their current Remastered frame-rate cost. See CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 Next-Gen change list; do not treat it as a current Remastered benchmark.

  • If you are making adjustments, change a small group of related settings and compare the same scene before and after.
  • Keep your resolution, lighting mode, and upscaler fixed while comparing conventional settings; otherwise it is difficult to tell what caused a change.
  • Do not assume a setting that affects image detail will have the same performance impact on every system.

Why does FPS fall when you raise the resolution?

Rendering at a higher output resolution puts more demand on the system, and CD PROJEKT RED explicitly says higher output resolution significantly affects FPS. If performance falls below your goal, compare a lower internal render resolution through an available upscaler before reducing several visual settings at once. Then assess whether the image quality remains acceptable at your display’s output resolution.

What if the current release runs poorly or is unavailable locally?

Check the game version, graphics driver, output resolution, and enabled rendering features before making further changes. If you need to revert, CD PROJEKT RED says older versions may be available depending on platform. NVIDIA also identifies GeForce NOW streaming as an access option for players without a local RTX PC capable of the enhanced experience; check service availability and membership details for your region before relying on it.
