Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if you want a defined, story-led adventure as Geralt, a monster hunter searching for Ciri. Choose The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim if you would rather create your own character and decide what kind of fantasy role-playing journey to follow. Neither is a universal winner: they offer different kinds of freedom, and the edition and platform you buy affect what is included.

These are differences in design, not proof that one game has objectively deeper combat or a better world. The publishers’ descriptions support a useful distinction: The Witcher 3 gives you an authored protagonist and a focused personal story, while Skyrim puts more emphasis on defining your character and choosing your own path. Choose The Witcher 3 if you want Geralt’s story
In The Witcher 3, you do not invent the central hero: you play Geralt, a monster slayer drawn into a search for Ciri. That makes it the more natural pick if you want a named protagonist, a clear personal stake, and a story that gives your exploration a central destination.
The Remastered edition also highlights changes to combat presentation and progression, including updated animations, finishers, an adaptive camera, and a reworked skill tree. Those features describe what the edition includes; they do not establish that its combat is better than Skyrim’s.

Skyrim is the better fit if creating a character and deciding how to approach the world matter more to you than following one established hero. Bethesda presents the game around free exploration, the Dragonborn’s encounters with dragons, and a range of weapons, spells, and abilities.
That self-directed framing can suit players who want to decide what their character becomes and which activities to pursue. It is a preference-based recommendation, not a claim that every part of Skyrim is more open or offers more content than The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3: Remastered
CD PROJEKT RED’s September 29, 2026 announcement says Remastered includes both major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The company describes it as a free upgrade for qualifying owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; owners of the original Nintendo Switch game also qualify for the Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade. The announcement lists purchase availability on Battle.net and Microsoft Store as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Eligibility and storefront availability can depend on your platform and territory, so check the current listing before buying or expecting an upgrade: CD PROJEKT RED’s release announcement.

Bethesda describes Anniversary Edition as the Skyrim Special Edition core game and add-ons bundled with Creation Club content. A digital upgrade is listed for people who already own Special Edition. Bethesda’s Special Edition announcement names three official add-ons: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. Compare the Anniversary Edition contents with what you already own, and confirm the current platform-store listing for your region: Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page and Special Edition announcement.

How to decide based on what you already own
- If you own a base game, check upgrade eligibility first. For The Witcher 3, confirm that your store and platform qualify for the Remastered upgrade. For Skyrim, check whether you own Special Edition and whether the Anniversary digital upgrade is available for your platform.
- Compare included content, not just the edition name. The Witcher 3 Remastered includes its two named expansions; Skyrim Anniversary Edition adds Creation Club content to Special Edition and its official add-ons.
- Verify mods for your exact setup. Bethesda documents console mod support for Special Edition and a unified Creations menu. CD PROJEKT RED documents REDkit for PC and describes cross-platform mod support with Remastered. Neither description means the games have identical mod libraries, tools, or platform coverage. There is no sourced head-to-head basis here for claiming one game has more hours, a larger map, better reviews, or superior overall quality. Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page makes the promotional claim of “more than 200 Game of the Year Awards,” but provides no award-by-award list or methodology; that figure is not a comparative measure of the two games.
