Stop using expired or recalled eye drops. In the United States, the preferred way to dispose of most unwanted medicines is a drug take-back location or prepaid mail-back service. If neither is readily available, check the product’s instructions and FDA’s flush list: most medicines, including drops, can go in household trash only when they are not on that list and no product-specific direction says otherwise.
What to do first
- Expired drops: Do not use them. The FDA says a medicine is not guaranteed to remain safe and effective after its expiration date. Eye drops require particular care because medicines used in the eyes must be sterile to reduce infection risk. See the FDA’s What You Should Know about Eye Drops and Don’t Be Tempted to Use Expired Medicines.
- Recalled drops: Stop using the product and follow the instructions in the specific recall notice. Recall directions can differ by product, lot, and packaging; general disposal advice does not replace them. If the notice does not explain disposal, ask the manufacturer, FDA, or a pharmacist.
Choose a disposal route
| Route | When to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Take-back or mail-back | Preferred for most unwanted and expired medicines. | Confirm the location or mail-back provider accepts the specific eye drops and packaging. Options may include participating retail, hospital, or clinic pharmacies and law-enforcement facilities. |
| Household trash | Fallback when take-back is not readily available, the medicine is not on FDA’s flush list, and no product-specific direction conflicts. | Prepare the drops as described below. FDA guidance includes drops among medicines that can generally be disposed of this way. |
| Flushing | Only if the exact medicine is on FDA’s flush list or the product-specific instructions direct you to flush it. | Check the active ingredient and instructions; do not assume eye drops can be flushed. Ask a pharmacist if uncertain. |
The FDA identifies take-back locations and prepaid mail-back envelopes as the best method for most medicines; some pharmacies offer disposal assistance. Availability and acceptance vary, so verify with the local provider. See Where and How to Dispose of Unused Medicines and Drug Disposal: Questions and Answers.

How to put eye drops in household trash
Use this FDA method only when take-back is unavailable, the exact medicine is not on the flush list, and the label, package insert, and recall notice do not give different directions:

Can you pour eye drops down a sink or toilet?
Do not pour medicine down a sink or toilet unless the exact medicine is on FDA’s flush list or its product-specific directions instruct you to flush it. FDA advises flushing only medicines on that list. If you cannot tell whether the active ingredient is listed, ask a pharmacist rather than guessing.
When to seek medical advice
If you have used a recalled product or develop eye discharge, pain, vision changes, or discomfort, stop using the drops and contact a healthcare professional. The FDA’s eye-drop guidance advises stopping use if these symptoms occur. If a child may have swallowed or otherwise been exposed to medicine, seek prompt professional guidance; the CDC reported 36,564 emergency-department visits among children aged 5 and under for unsupervised medication exposures in 2020, a figure for medications generally, not eye drops specifically.

Check product and local instructions
This guidance is for the United States and covers general medicine-disposal options. The product label, package insert, and recall notice take priority where they differ, and local collection programs may have their own acceptance rules. There is no single discard-after-opening interval that applies to every eye-drop formulation; follow the specific product instructions.
