The Witcher 3 HDR Settings: How to Get Natural-Looking Colors

There is no universal Witcher 3 HDR preset. Calibrate system HDR first, then tune the Remastered game against shadow detail, preserved highlights, and restrained color.

For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, there is no verified one-size-fits-all HDR preset. Calibrate your display and system HDR first, then adjust the game in small steps until shadows remain detailed, bright clouds and light sources retain texture, and skin, foliage, and fire look believable rather than oversaturated. The Remastered release changed tone mapping and HDR controls, so settings written for the earlier version may not apply.

First, check which version and platform you are using

The Remastered edition launched September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED says eligible owners of earlier physical or digital editions can receive a free upgrade within the same platform ecosystem. The upgrade includes changed tone mapping and an updated HDR calibration panel, among other rendering changes. The announcement describes the goal as “Updated tone mapping for improved colors, lighting, contrast and detail.” CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement does not provide recommended slider values.

Build matters as well as edition. On October 1, Patch 5.00b adjusted lighting on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC, including fixes for interiors that looked too dark. The PC Hotfix 5.00c changed Velen visuals, including bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation, and Path Tracing lighting. Check the installed update for your platform before following settings advice; these notes describe changes through October 4, 2026, not a promise about later builds. Patch 5.00b notes and Hotfix 5.00c notes specify the affected builds.

Calibrate system HDR before changing the game

HDR is not a single brightness switch: it expands the contrast, color, and brightness range compared with SDR, but the display and connected setup affect the result. Sony notes that image quality depends on the entertainment setup. On PS5, enable HDR and run the console calibration before compensating inside the game:

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and enable HDR.
  2. Choose Video Output > Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration prompts.
  3. Launch the game and compare its image in a repeatable scene, rather than changing several sliders at once.

Sony’s instructions are for PS5; the cited sources do not establish an equivalent exact menu path for Xbox or every PC storefront. Sony’s PS5 HDR instructions explain the system workflow.

Use a repeatable scene and judge the image by detail

Open the game’s display or video settings and look for its HDR calibration controls. The precise in-game path can vary by platform and build. Use a scene with dark areas, a bright sky or light source, and recognizable skin or vegetation. Make one small adjustment, return to the same scene, and assess the result before changing another control.

Samsung 32” Odyssey G5 (G50F) Series QHD Gaming Monitor
  • Samsung’s 32” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals for exhilarating gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before.
  • QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
  • With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers crisp, clear hues from various viewpoints.
  • 180Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (GtG) allow fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, plus G-Sync compatibility syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
  • Shadows: Keep detail visible in dark interiors without lifting black areas until they look gray or hazy.
  • Highlights: Preserve texture in clouds and around bright sources instead of letting them become featureless white patches.
  • Color: Check skin, foliage, and fire. If they look unnaturally vivid, reduce saturation rather than treating intense color as proof that HDR is working well.
  • Overall scene brightness: If the image looks washed out or too bright, try reducing excessive paper white or saturation in small increments. This is a troubleshooting approach, not a tested numeric prescription.

Room lighting, display capability, tone mapping, platform, and game build all affect the appearance. A setting that looks balanced on one display or in one room may not translate to another.

What the Remastered PC sliders do—and what their numbers mean

A PC analysis posted September 30, 2026, by KoKlusz at HDR-Gaming-Database reports these controls and displayed ranges/defaults for its examined Remastered build. They are observations from that analysis, not official recommendations and not evidence of console behavior.

PC control Range shown in the analysis Displayed default How to use it
Max Monitor Brightness 300–4000 nits 500 Relates to the maximum brightness setting exposed by the game; do not assume the displayed default matches every monitor’s measured capability.
Paper White 100–500 nits 300 Affects the brightness of the game’s paper-white reference; lower it cautiously if the overall image appears excessively bright.
Saturation 0–1 0.20 Adjust sparingly if colors look exaggerated or washed out.

The same analysis says its tested PC build ignored peak brightness reported through EDID or calibrated in the operating system. That is an observation of the tested build, not a general statement about every PC configuration or platform. Read the September 2026 PC Remastered HDR analysis for its scope and details.

Troubleshoot a washed-out, too-bright, or dark picture

If the picture looks washed out or too bright

  • Confirm HDR is enabled and calibrated at the system level before adjusting game controls.
  • Reduce Paper White or saturation a little at a time, if those controls are available, and compare in the same scene.
  • Check a scene with both dark and bright areas; do not judge the setting from a bright menu or isolated light source alone.

If dark areas lose detail

  • Confirm the game is updated. Patch 5.00b specifically included lighting adjustments and fixes for interiors that appeared too dark on its listed platforms.
  • Recheck the same interior after the patch, then make small adjustments rather than lifting all dark tones until blacks turn gray.

If colors look unnaturally vivid or foliage changes between scenes

  • On PC, make sure the build includes Hotfix 5.00c, which changed Velen vegetation lighting and saturation among other visual elements.
  • Use saturation conservatively and compare skin, foliage, and fire—not just one vivid scene.

If HDR controls are missing

CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered notes say the calibration panel was updated and that settings sometimes failed to appear on consoles. Check for the latest platform update, then reopen the display or video settings. Do not assume an older menu guide describes the current panel.

Why older Witcher 3 HDR presets can mislead

Version 4.0’s December 2022 next-gen update had its own platform differences. A December 2025 analysis of the earlier PC implementation lists Gamma, Max Monitor Brightness, and Paper White and describes different defaults from the Remastered PC analysis. Those historical values are not Remastered defaults; applying them without checking the game version risks tuning for a different implementation. The earlier PC HDR analysis and CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 next-gen change list document that older context.
