Neither test can predict exactly how software will feel on every older computer, so check compatibility and, where possible, try a product on your own PC.
Which antivirus is lightest on a low-spec PC?
In AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 low-end performance test, McAfee Total Protection had the lowest combined impact score, followed by Kaspersky Premium and ESET HOME Security Essential. Lower scores indicate less measured impact within this particular test—not stronger protection or a guaranteed speed improvement on your computer.

The test used an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 11 system with an Intel Core i3, 8 GB of RAM, an SSD system drive, default product settings, and an active internet connection. It measured file copying, archiving, application installation and launching, downloads, browsing, and office productivity. The products and versions shown are those evaluated in April 2026.

Scores and versions are from AV-Comparatives’ Consumer Performance Test (low-end), April 2026. They are relative test scores, not seconds of delay or a prediction for a particular machine. The report explicitly says its performance test measures impact, not protection effectiveness. Its separate Procyon result for Microsoft Defender was 97.1 against a baseline of 100; that is a different scale and should not be compared with the combined impact scores.

Which low-impact options also have strong protection results?
Performance and protection are separate questions. AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows 11 consumer assessment rated products on protection, performance, and usability using publicly available versions during July and August 2026. Avast, AVG, and ESET each earned 6/6 in all three categories. Microsoft Defender earned 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability.
These AV-TEST ratings are a second, independent check; they are not the same measurement as AV-Comparatives’ low-end impact scores. The AV-TEST results are for its Windows 11 test environment and do not establish performance or compatibility on every older Windows version or low-spec PC. Shortlist: which one should you consider?
ESET: balanced evidence across both tests
ESET HOME Security Essential ranked among the lowest-impact products in AV-Comparatives’ low-end test, and ESET earned full marks in all three AV-TEST categories. That combination makes it a well-supported place to start if you want both a low-impact result and a separate positive protection and usability assessment. Verify the exact edition’s current compatibility before installing.
Avast or AVG: free options with favorable results
Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free each scored 5.5 in the AV-Comparatives low-end impact test and earned 6/6 for protection, performance, and usability in AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows 11 assessment. Their results make them reasonable candidates to compare on your PC; lab ratings do not tell you which interface or optional features you will prefer.

McAfee or Kaspersky: the lowest measured impact scores
McAfee Total Protection and Kaspersky Premium led AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 impact ranking, with scores of 3.3 and 3.5. Those figures make them especially relevant if measured system impact is your main selection criterion. The AV-TEST facts cited here do not provide corresponding August 2026 ratings for these two products, so do not treat their impact scores alone as a protection comparison.
Microsoft Defender: a built-in baseline, not a performance guarantee
Microsoft Defender is included with supported Windows versions and is worth considering before adding another security product. In the April low-end test it scored 12.9 on AV-Comparatives’ combined impact scale, while AV-TEST gave it 5.5/6 for performance and full marks for protection and usability in August 2026. Differences in test method and setup mean these results should not be collapsed into one ranking.

How to choose for your actual computer
- Check the operating system first. Confirm your Windows edition and version, then check the product vendor’s compatibility page for that exact release. A result from Windows 11 testing does not prove support for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or other older systems.
- Compare impact and protection separately. Use the AV-Comparatives figures above for relative impact on its defined low-end setup, and a separate protection assessment such as AV-TEST’s. Do not infer protection from a low impact score.
- Check what the edition includes. A paid suite can include additional features that may add complexity. Independent lab scores do not settle whether those features suit your needs, nor do they establish current prices or subscription terms.
- Try it under your normal workload if a trial is available. Test the tasks you care about—such as opening your browser, launching work applications, or copying files—and notice whether scans or background activity interrupt them. Configuration, background apps, settings, and software conflicts can change the experience.
Why Windows support matters as much as antivirus choice
Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That means standard technical assistance, feature updates, and security updates have ended. Eligible consumer devices may enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027; eligibility and enrollment matter, so it is not accurate to assume every Windows 10 device receives those updates. Before buying or installing antivirus for an older PC, check whether its hardware can run a currently supported Windows release. Microsoft lists Windows 11 minimums including a supported 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and a 64 GB or larger storage device. The AV-Comparatives low-end test used 8 GB of RAM and an SSD, so its results should not be assumed to represent a PC that barely meets Windows 11’s minimums. What older performance awards can—and cannot—tell you
AV-Comparatives’ annual 2025 summary awarded performance Gold to Avast and AVG, Silver to Norton, and Bronze to McAfee; it also named Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, ESET, G Data, Kaspersky, and Norton Top-Rated overall in its consumer test series. Those awards summarize tests from January through December 2025, not the newer April 2026 low-end test. They provide broader historical context, but should not replace the more directly relevant low-end scores when choosing for a modest PC. See the AV-Comparatives Summary Report 2025.
