The files are usually still in the image: a Docker volume mounted over their directory makes the volume’s contents visible at that path instead. To see the image’s files directly, recreate the container without that mount, or put the required files into the mounted volume.
Why the files disappeared from view
A mount takes precedence at its destination path. If a container image includes files in /app/data and a non-empty volume is mounted at /app/data, Docker shows the volume’s contents there—not the image directory underneath. Docker describes this as similar to mounting a USB drive over a directory on a Linux host. The underlying image files are obscured; that alone does not mean they were deleted. Docker’s volume documentation explains this behavior.

The key detail is whether the volume already contains data. A non-empty volume presents its own contents at the mount target. A new or empty volume behaves differently: Docker copies the target directory’s existing files into it by default when the volume is mounted. The volume-nocopy option disables that initialization copy. This copy-on-empty behavior does not mean that mounting a volume with existing data merges its contents with the image directory.

Find the mount and check its source
Before changing anything, identify the container’s mount destination and source. Confirm whether the mount is a Docker volume or a host bind mount, then check whether its source contains the files you expect. Docker’s --mount syntax makes the mount type, source, and target explicit; its container-running guide documents volume and bind-mount examples.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For example, a mount configured with type=volume, source=appdata, and target=/app/data means Docker presents the appdata volume at /app/data. If the expected files are absent from that volume, they will not appear through that path simply because they exist in the image beneath it.

Reveal the files in the image
Docker says the straightforward way to reveal obscured files is to recreate the container without the mount at that destination. A mount cannot be straightforwardly removed from a running container to uncover the directory beneath it. Recreate the container with an adjusted run configuration, leaving that target unmounted if you want to inspect the image’s files directly. Docker’s volume guidance describes recreation without the mount as the best option for revealing obscured files.

Keep the mount and make the files available
If the application needs those files while the volume remains mounted, seed the volume with the required content. For a new or empty volume, Docker’s default initialization copies files from the image directory at the target. If the volume already contains data, arrange for the needed files to be added to that volume; do not assume Docker will merge the image directory into a non-empty volume on mount.

Do not delete or prune a volume just to make hidden files reappear. Docker volumes can persist independently of containers, and removing a container does not by itself remove a named volume. Inspect the volume’s contents and role before removing it. Docker’s storage overview summarizes how volumes differ from other mount types.

Pick a mount type for the job
| Mount type | Use it when | Persistence and access |
|---|---|---|
| Docker volume | Data should persist independently of a container or be shared among containers. | Docker-managed storage that persists after container removal. |
| Bind mount | The same host files need to be accessible from the host and container. | Direct link to a host path; host and container processes can modify the mounted files. |
| tmpfs mount | Data is temporary and should not be persisted to disk. | Stored in host memory and lost when the container stops or the host reboots. |
| Image mount | A container needs read-only files packaged in another image. | Read-only; requires the containerd image store. |
Docker’s storage documentation outlines these mount categories. Choose based on whether data must persist, be directly accessible on the host, remain temporary, or be read-only.

The Dockerfile VOLUME instruction declares a mount point. Docker’s Dockerfile reference says that docker run initializes a newly created volume with data from that location in the image; its example copies a greeting file into the volume. This is consistent with the default initialization behavior for an empty volume, but it does not change what happens when a non-empty volume is mounted over a directory: the volume’s view takes precedence.
