TopoExport and Shapezo serve different stages of a 3D site workflow: TopoExport describes exporting mapped geographic layers and terrain into other applications; Shapezo describes generating and refining an editable site-context concept from a selected map area. You can use them in the same project, but keep source-based terrain distinct from generated concepts and verify every handoff in the software where the data will be used.
How the tools differ
The clearest distinction is between transferring mapped data and exploring a concept. TopoExport presents terrain and geographic-layer downloads for downstream CAD, BIM, and 3D work. Shapezo presents map-area-based generation of buildings and surrounding layers for early site-context modeling. This distinction comes from Shapezo’s own comparison, not independent product testing; it is best treated as a description of intended workflow, not proof of accuracy or suitability.

| Question | TopoExport | Shapezo |
|---|---|---|
| Stated role | Export mapped terrain and geographic layers for use in another application. | Generate, review, and adjust an editable site-context concept for a selected map area. |
| Layers described | Buildings, cadastral parcels, roads, railways, waterways, trees, contour lines, and terrain/DTM. | Buildings, terrain, water, and vegetation. |
| Formats and destinations | The product describes vector, 3D, and BIM-related formats and common CAD/3D destinations. Its API page lists terrain outputs including GeoTIFF and glTF; check the live product for the exact current options. | The product describes exports for compatible 3D, BIM, GIS, and game-engine workflows. Available formats vary by workflow and integration; confirm the exact option for the destination application. |
| Coverage qualification | The site says detailed terrain is available only in Germany and Switzerland. Check current coverage for the exact area. | Area-specific source data and geographic coverage are not fully specified on the public product page described here; confirm them for the site you plan to model. |
| Pricing information established here | The API estimator uses selected layers and area to calculate credits. Its displayed estimates are examples, not a current quote. | Exact current pricing and terms are not established here; check the live product. |
TopoExport describes a DTM as terrain without buildings or vegetation. That label alone does not establish survey-grade quality. A polished, exportable, or editable 3D model is not necessarily appropriate for engineering or formal design decisions: establish its source, coverage, coordinate reference, units, elevation datum, resolution, and applicable license first.
When to choose each one
Choose TopoExport for terrain and mapped-layer transfer
TopoExport is the more direct fit when you need mapped terrain or geographic layers to bring into an existing CAD, BIM, or 3D workflow. It may also help supply contextual layers around the site. Before committing, confirm the area is covered, the needed layers and output are available, and the resulting data uses conventions your receiving application can handle.
#1 Best Overall
Choose Shapezo for early site-context exploration
Shapezo is the more direct fit when you want to select a map area, generate surrounding context, and review or adjust a concept. Treat generated buildings, terrain, water, and vegetation as concept material unless you have independently verified their provenance and suitability for the project. Preserve the input area and assumptions so later reviewers can tell what the model represents.
Use both when the project needs both stages
A practical combined workflow is to bring source-based terrain and relevant geographic layers into the project, then generate a separate concept for exploring placements and relationships to the surroundings. Compare concepts against the same terrain and site constraints; do not let a generated surface silently replace the terrain evidence used for design.

A practical terrain-to-concept pipeline
- Define the study area and intended use. Record the boundary, the decisions the model will support, and whether the output is for visual context, concept exploration, or more consequential design work. The more consequential the decision, the more important it is to verify data against project-appropriate sources.
- Establish terrain provenance. For each terrain input, record its source, acquisition or update date if supplied, boundary, coordinate reference system, horizontal and vertical units, elevation datum, and any stated resolution or accuracy information. Inspect for missing values, outliers, and implausible elevation changes. These checks are recommended in Shapezo’s workflow article, not the results of an independent accuracy test.
- Export and inspect in the receiving application. Select the area, layers, and output suited to the destination, then check the imported result for scale, orientation, coordinate position, vertical direction, topology, mesh simplification, and gaps. Applications may triangulate or interpret data differently, so a visually similar mesh does not necessarily preserve the same useful detail. These are workflow checks, not a guarantee that either service meets a particular tolerance.
- Generate a separate concept layer. In Shapezo, select a bounded map area, generate the site context, and review and adjust the relevant layers. Keep the boundary, input description, generation date, map information, and unresolved assumptions with the exported concept.
- Compare alternatives using project-relevant criteria. Assess access, building placement and orientation, density, open space, and the relationship to nearby context. Keep concept alternatives distinguishable from terrain data and formal design information.
- Validate decisions before adopting them. If a concept suggests a useful arrangement, carry the relevant spatial decisions into the project model and check them against the accepted terrain and design constraints. Retain separate terrain, concept, and design states rather than merging them into an unlabeled model.
Checks to make before relying on an export
For the exact site, output, and intended use, confirm the following directly with the products and in your receiving software:

- Resolution or accuracy documentation, update date, and any known gaps.
- Coordinate reference support, horizontal and vertical units, and elevation datum.
- The exact export format, selected layers, area limits, and compatibility with the receiving application.
- Whether layers remain editable and how the receiving application handles topology, triangulation, and simplification.
- Licensing and commercial-use terms for the project.
- Total cost for the actual area and layers. TopoExport’s API page provides an area-and-layer credit estimator, but displayed examples should not be treated as a quote; current API pricing and commercial-use terms should be checked directly.
A French public-sector reuse listing describes TopoExport as generating 3D terrain models from official geographic data and lists DXF, STL, OBJ, IFC, PDF, and SVG. The catalog record was last updated on 2025-10-30, so it is a secondary description rather than a current guarantee of formats, coverage, or product availability: French public-sector reuse listing.
