Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The key is to distinguish loading a font for the current session from installing it persistently. Windows font-resource APIs such as AddFontResourceEx load fonts temporarily; they do not, by themselves, install them across reboots. A persistent system-wide installation involves placing the font in the Windows Fonts folder and registering it, which requires the appropriate permissions. For a one-off install, Windows’ built-in font-file workflow is usually simpler than a script.
What “installing a font” can mean
A script can make a font available temporarily, or it can set up a persistent installation. Those are different jobs, even if both are casually described as installing.
| Approach | What it does | Persistence and scope |
|---|---|---|
Right-click a .ttf or .otf file and choose Install |
Uses Windows’ standard font-file workflow. | Windows 10 and 11 guidance also offers Install for all users. See Microsoft’s Manage Fonts in Windows instructions. |
AddFontResource or AddFontResourceEx |
Adds font resources for use during the current session. The extended API can mark a font private or prevent its enumeration. | Not a persistent installation; the font resource must be added again after a reboot. Runtime use also calls for a font-change notification, and an application should remove resources it loaded when finished. See Microsoft’s font installation and deletion documentation and the AddFontResourceExW reference. |
Copy to %windir%fonts and register the font |
Uses Microsoft’s documented system-level route for a permanent installation. | Requires appropriate rights to the Windows Fonts directory and the Fonts registry key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Copying the file alone may not make it available to active applications immediately; Microsoft notes it becomes available after reboot if it is only copied. |
For a single font, use Windows’ built-in install workflow
On Windows 10 or 11, locate the trusted .ttf or .otf file in File Explorer, right-click it, then select Install for the ordinary install option or Install for all users when it should be available system-wide and you have the required permissions. The exact availability of the all-users choice depends on the account’s rights.
This is often the right answer when a font has been copied into a folder but does not appear in an app: copying is not always equivalent to registering and making the font available to applications already running. After installation, close and reopen the target application if it has not refreshed its font list.

What a VBScript or PowerShell script should do
Choose the script’s goal before choosing its mechanism. If a font is needed only while an application runs, a font-resource API may be appropriate. If users need it after reboot, the script needs to perform a persistent installation rather than merely call AddFontResourceEx.
For current-session use
AddFontResourceEx returns the number of fonts added; zero indicates failure, and the API does not provide extended error information. Its FR_PRIVATE flag restricts the font to the calling process, while FR_NOT_ENUM prevents enumeration. Neither flag makes the font persistent. For applications that add or delete font resources, Microsoft says to send WM_FONTCHANGE to top-level windows so other applications can learn about the change. The application should also remove resources it loaded when it no longer needs them.

That behavior is a runtime technique, not a general-purpose deployment solution. If the process exits or Windows restarts, a temporary load is not a substitute for a persistent install.
For a persistent system-wide install
Microsoft documents copying the font into %windir%fonts and registering it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFonts. A script that follows this route needs suitable administrative rights and must register the font using an appropriate display name; assuming the filename is always the correct registry name can produce an unreliable result. The documented steps and Windows behavior are described in Microsoft’s font installation and deletion guidance.

There is no single script pattern established here as reliable for every Windows edition, deployment agent, privilege context, or multi-session setup. In particular, a script that copies a file or loads a font resource should not be presented as a universal persistent installer unless it also handles registration and has been validated in the intended environment.
Why an installed font may not show up immediately
- The script only loaded the font temporarily. A font-resource API call does not establish persistence across reboot.
- The font file was copied but not registered. Microsoft’s system-level instructions distinguish copying and registration; copying alone may require a reboot before the font is available.
- The application has not refreshed its font list. Close and reopen the app after a persistent install. For runtime API use, the responsible application should send
WM_FONTCHANGE. - The script lacks the required permissions. Machine-wide writes to the Windows Fonts directory and the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEFonts key require suitable rights. - The machine uses multiple or terminal-server sessions. Microsoft notes that some installed-font changes may not appear in other terminal-server sessions until reboot.
Use trusted font files and respect their license
Font files are inputs that should be treated as untrusted unless their origin has been checked. Microsoft’s guidance for a problematic font recommends installing it as a remediation rather than weakening untrusted-font protection by excluding applications. See Microsoft’s untrusted-font guidance.
