Reports described a round of polish focused on setup, administration, and hardware and software compatibility. What did Windows 2000 RC2 change?
An excerpt attributed to Microsoft’s RC2 FAQ and reproduced by the ActiveWindows archive described the work as further “fit-and-finish” improvements. It said the release aimed to make setup and configuration easier, clarify wizards and error messages, make administration tools more consistent, and improve hardware and software compatibility. The examples below are reported claims from that FAQ excerpt, not independent test results.

- Devices and the desktop: The FAQ cited Plug and Play support for multifunction peripherals, support for more printers including the HP OfficeJet series, Start Menu cleanup, more meaningful icons, and InfoTips.
- Administration: Local Security Settings and Services snap-ins were made easier to find from the Start Menu. Event Viewer descriptions gained hyperlinks, while event data was consolidated on one property page.
- Server and network tools: The excerpt listed improvements to Active Directory, security, computer management, performance, DHCP, DNS, WINS, and routing tools.
- Media and international support: Windows Media Services was included for streaming audio, video, and other media over networks. The FAQ also cited 30 additional international Certification Authorities, described as covering approximately 20 countries.
The ActiveWindows archive’s September 1999 coverage reproduces the FAQ excerpt and contemporary reports about RC2.
When was RC2 released, and what was its build number?
Contemporary archived coverage identifies RC2 as build 2128 and reports its release during September 1999. One archive item dated September 17 reported that it had been released; another, dated September 20, said Microsoft planned to distribute it to DevDays attendees that week. These reports establish the period and build number, but they do not verify an exact official Microsoft publication or download timestamp.

The same September coverage characterized RC2 as one of the final milestones and the last planned release candidate with major changes. It also said a third candidate remained possible, with any fixes expected to be minor. That was a report of the plan at the time, not confirmation that no later candidate or changes followed.

Those were final product editions; RC2 was a prerelease build, not a separate edition. Microsoft’s February 17, 2000 launch announcement confirms the availability date and describes the editions.
