On a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, use Finder for device syncing. On Windows 10 or later, Apple’s file-sharing instructions use the Apple Devices app. The right steps depend on whether you want to open a PDF in Books, sync it from a computer, or copy it into another app.
Open a PDF in Apple Books on iPhone or iPad
- Open the PDF attachment or file in Mail, Messages, or another app.
- Tap the Share button, then choose Books from the available apps. Button placement and labels can vary by device and operating-system version.
- Open the PDF from your Books library. Apple’s guides cover iPhone and iPad.
In Books, you can use the Share options to send or print a PDF, and Markup tools to annotate it. Apple Books is not available in every country or region.

Choose the right computer workflow
“Add a PDF to iTunes” can mean different things. Reading in Books, syncing books from a computer, and copying a document into a third-party app are separate workflows.

Sync a PDF or book from a computer
For a Mac on macOS Catalina or later, connect the device and use Finder’s device-sync controls. Apple describes this as the current Mac route for syncing content, including books, with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The precise controls can vary with the operating-system version; follow Apple’s Finder sync guide.

On macOS Mojave or earlier, iTunes remains the applicable sync tool. Apple also says iTunes syncing applies on a PC, but Windows file-sharing instructions now distinguish the Apple Devices app on Windows 10 or later. Check the task and Windows version rather than assuming every iTunes feature has moved to one replacement. See Apple’s sync guidance and file-sharing guidance.
Use File Sharing only for apps that support it
File Sharing is for moving documents into or out of a compatible app, not for adding a PDF to the Apple Books library. Apple’s iTunes instructions describe selecting an app in the File Sharing area and adding files to that app’s Documents list. Only use file types supported by the selected app.

- Open the appropriate computer app: Finder on macOS Catalina or later, Apple Devices on Windows 10 or later, or iTunes on older supported configurations.
- Select the connected device and locate its File Sharing area.
- Select the destination app, then add the PDF to its Documents list if that app supports the file.

Apple also lists iCloud Drive and AirDrop as ways to transfer or access documents. They can avoid a wired computer-sync workflow, but they are not the same as syncing a device’s content through Finder or iTunes. Use Apple’s Finder file-sharing guidance for its listed alternatives.

Keep Books content in sync across Apple devices
To access Books content across devices, sign in to the same Apple Account on each one and enable Books in iCloud, including the Books controls for the library or Home and iCloud Drive where applicable. Apple gives different settings paths for iOS and iPadOS 17 or earlier, iOS and iPadOS 18 or later, and different macOS releases, so use the version-specific directions in Set up iCloud for Apple Books on all your devices instead of relying on one universal menu path.
With the applicable syncing controls enabled, Books can keep reading position, bookmarks, notes, highlights, library, and collections available across devices. This is cloud-based Books syncing, not a requirement for opening a PDF stored locally on one device.
