The Timer Rang Just as You Got Somewhere: Should You Keep Working?

When a work timer rings just as a difficult task comes into focus, treat it as permission to stop—not a command. Continue to a natural edge if you’re in a productive stretch.

If a timer rings just as a difficult task starts to make sense, you do not have to stop on the spot. In his DEV Community essay, Serguey Asael Shinder suggests treating the timer as a floor, not a ceiling: use it to make starting easier, then decide whether to take a break or continue to a natural stopping point.

Why the timer can feel badly timed

Shinder describes a familiar pattern with the 25-minute work interval and five-minute break: the first part of a difficult task can go toward circling the problem before the work begins to come into focus. The timer may ring just as that slow start gives way to progress. A fixed stopping point can then interrupt the concentration it took time to build.

Use the timer to start, not to dictate the stop

A timer can make an avoided task feel more manageable by putting a boundary around the initial commitment. Shinder’s adjustment is to keep that starting aid but treat the alarm as permission to stop, rather than an order to stop.

Rotating Productivity Timer 5/25/10/50, Desk Flip Timer, ADHD Tool
  • A Real 5/25 Task Timer. The 5/25 working or studying technique is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by 5 -minute breaks. We have preset 5, 25 minutes for you, you don’t have to set it every time by yourself. Other similar cube timers in the market are not real 5/25 timers as they don’t have preset 5, 25 minutes.
  • Rotating Productivity Timer with Gra vity Sensor. We have preset 5, 25, 10, 50 minutes for gra vity sensing mode. You only need to flip the timer to the preset number with facing upwards, and then it will automatically start to countdown. Flip the timer screen facing upwards to stop the timing; Flip the timer screen facing downwards to reset it to zero.
  • Support Custom Modes. You can also adjust this digital timer to other values that you want as it supports 00-99 minutes and 59 seconds timing. You can also adjust it to countdown mode or stopwatch mode.
  • 3 Volume Levels: Silent/High Volume/Low Volume. In silent mode, the vibration is noticeable at your desk without disturbing others nearby. High volume: 90-100dB; Low volume: 70-80dB.
  • Great for Work, School, Office, Kitchen. This cube timer with stylish and aesthetic design is a great present for students, friends, or coworkers, and families, people with ADHD, using it for work/ office, back to school & off to college/ classroom/study, workout, kitchen, etc.

When it rings, check what kind of work moment you are in:

  • Still struggling to get traction? Take the break. The timer has done its job by helping you begin.
  • In a productive stretch? Consider continuing to a natural edge, then take the break. Examples include a test passing, the end of a function, or writing down the next step.

The point is not to ignore the timer indefinitely. Shinder separately cautions against working for hours without a break; his suggestion is to avoid interrupting a useful stretch merely because the alarm sounded.

Match the interval to the kind of task

Shinder reserves strict intervals for shallower tasks such as email, reviews, and tidying, which he says involve less mental setup to interrupt. For difficult work that takes time to enter, he favors a more flexible stopping point. These are the author’s recommendations, not experimentally established rules.

Situation Approach in Shinder’s essay
Starting an avoided task Use the timer to make the first commitment feel bounded.
Difficult work is beginning to flow when the timer rings Continue to a natural edge, then take the break.
You are still in an unproductive or struggling phase Stop and take the break when the timer rings.
Shallow tasks such as email or tidying Keep the fixed interval, as these tasks may involve less setup to interrupt.

What the essay establishes—and what it does not

The essay offers a practical distinction between a timer as a starting aid and a timer as a compulsory stop signal. It does not establish that extending a work interval improves productivity, define a universally ideal interval, or show that one timing method works better for everyone. The retrieved DEV Community result labels the essay “Posted on Sep 30” and “last year,” but the page text available here does not expose a verified calendar year, so its publication year cannot be stated confidently.
