Google Brain was Google Research’s AI team; DeepMind was a separate AI research organization. In April 2023, Google brought the Brain team and DeepMind together in a combined unit called Google DeepMind. So today, the key distinction is historical: Google Brain is a predecessor team, while Google DeepMind is the organization formed by combining the two.

What was Google Brain?

Google Brain was an AI research team within Google Research. It was one of the two groups named when Google announced the formation of Google DeepMind. In the announcement, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the new group would “bring together two leading research groups in the AI field: the Brain team from Google Research, and DeepMind.” (Google, April 20, 2023)

What changed when Google Brain and DeepMind joined?

On April 20, 2023, Google announced Google DeepMind as the combined unit. The company said it would draw on Google’s computational resources to accelerate work on capable AI systems, with safety and responsibility as part of that effort. This was an organizational consolidation, not a comparison between two competing products.

Google later described Gemini as the first realization of the vision behind forming Google DeepMind. Its announcement also noted that Google Research adversarial-testing techniques were used in safety work around deployment. That example reflects collaboration across Google’s AI work; it does not establish that Gemini belonged exclusively to either legacy team. (Google, December 6, 2023)

How do Google DeepMind and Google Research differ now?

Google’s April 18, 2024 organizational update said teams focused on building models across Research and Google DeepMind would be consolidated within Google DeepMind. Google Research, meanwhile, would continue foundational and applied computer-science research, including work on computing systems, foundational machine learning and algorithms, and applied science and society. Google said the two organizations would continue to collaborate. (Google, April 18, 2024)

Organization or name Meaning Role in the timeline
Google Brain AI research team within Google Research Predecessor team brought into Google DeepMind in 2023
DeepMind The other AI research group named in Google’s merger announcement Combined with the Brain team to form Google DeepMind in 2023
Google DeepMind Combined organization Home for model-building teams as described in Google’s 2024 update
Google Research Google research organization with a continuing foundational and applied computer-science remit Continues alongside Google DeepMind and collaborates with it

Is Google Brain part of DeepMind now?

Google combined the Brain team from Google Research with DeepMind to create Google DeepMind in 2023. It is therefore more accurate to describe Google Brain as a predecessor of Google DeepMind than as a separate current organization. Google Research itself did not disappear; Google’s 2024 update described its ongoing research remit and collaboration with Google DeepMind.
