Choose iMazing only if you specifically want added local controls such as scheduled backups, historical snapshots, custom storage locations, or backup browsing and export. These options serve different needs; no comparative performance or recovery testing establishes one as universally best.
Which iPhone backup option fits you?
| Option | Best fit | Where the backup is stored | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Backup | You want an automatic backup stored away from your iPhone. | iCloud | Check your current account and available storage before relying on it. Current plan prices and capacity were not verified here. |
| Finder or Apple Devices | You want Apple’s built-in backup to a computer. | Your Mac or Windows PC | Local backups are not encrypted by default. Encryption adds certain data categories but requires a password you must retain. |
| iMazing | You need extra controls for managing local backups. | Computer, external drive, or NAS, according to iMazing | Its vendor documentation describes snapshots, scheduled backups, custom locations, and browsing or exporting backup data. It does not work with iCloud backups. |
Apple describes a backup as a copy of information you can use if your device is replaced, lost, or damaged. Its Windows instructions cover Apple Devices, with iTunes for older supported setups; on Mac, Finder is the current path, while iTunes applies to macOS Mojave or earlier. See Apple’s Windows backup instructions and backup overview.

Use iCloud for an automatic off-device copy
Choose iCloud if you want your backup stored separately from the computer you use every day. Apple documents iCloud as a backup option, but whether it suits you depends on your current account and storage situation. Confirm those details in your Apple account before making it your only backup route. Apple’s iPhone backup overview explains the available paths.

Back up to a computer with Apple’s built-in tools
On a Mac
- Connect your iPhone to the Mac.
- Open Finder and select your iPhone in the sidebar.
- Choose the computer-backup option and select Back Up Now. To include sensitive categories available only in an encrypted computer backup, enable local backup encryption and set a password.
On Windows
- Connect your iPhone to the PC.
- Open Apple Devices and select your iPhone.
- Choose the computer-backup option and start the backup. If the PC does not have Apple Devices, Apple says to use iTunes for supported setups.
Apple’s current Windows workflow is documented in its Windows backup instructions. Local computer backups are not encrypted by default. Apple says encryption can include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history. It does not include Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode data; see Apple’s encrypted-backup guidance.

Decide whether to encrypt the local backup
Encryption is useful if you want the additional categories Apple lists in an encrypted backup. It also creates a password obligation: Apple warns that if you forget the password, you cannot use previous encrypted backups. Store it somewhere secure and retrievable, rather than relying on memory alone. Apple explains the password requirement in its Windows instructions and lists the included and excluded data in its encrypted-backup guidance.
When iMazing’s extra controls are useful
Consider iMazing if Apple’s basic backup choices do not provide the local management controls you need. iMazing’s documentation describes scheduled local backups, snapshots over time, custom backup locations such as external drives or NAS, and browsing or exporting data from backups. These are capabilities described by the vendor, not independently tested results. Its FAQ also says it does not work with iCloud backups: its workflow relies on local backups.
Rank #2
- Storage Capacity: 500 GB (gigabyte) of storage space.
- Compact Size: 2.5-inch form factor for portability.
- Multi-Platform Compatibility: Works seamlessly with PS4, Mac, phones (Andriods with USB C), and Xbox devices.
- High-Speed Data Transfer: USB 3.0/C for fast data transfer speeds.
- Sleek Design: Stylish and durable casing.
A separate storage destination is optional, not a prerequisite for backing up an iPhone. If you already use local backups and want another destination, iMazing documents external drives and NAS as possible locations in its backup-location guide. An external SSD for iPhone backups may suit that setup, but the drive itself does not replace the backup software or process.
Choose a backup workflow you can maintain
- Choose iCloud if an automatic off-device copy is your priority and your account has suitable storage.
- Choose Finder or Apple Devices if you prefer Apple’s built-in computer backup. Consider encryption for the additional data it can include, and keep the password safe.
- Consider iMazing if you want local scheduling, snapshots, custom destinations, or backup browsing and export—and are comfortable with its local-backup model rather than iCloud backups.
The right choice is the one whose storage location, password requirements, and routine you understand well enough to keep using. No speed, usability, recovery-success, or security comparison is established for these options here, so “best” depends on the controls and storage path you need.
