Start with updates, then set up the display and navigation for how you use your phone. Next, review privacy and security controls; adjust battery and camera options only when their trade-offs suit you. The steps below apply to the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra, but some features and menu paths vary by model, region, carrier, and installed software version.
1. Install available software and security updates
Before changing other settings, check the update screens on your own phone. Samsung identifies software updates and security-update checks as routine Galaxy support tasks. Updates can also change features and menu layouts, so follow the labels shown on your device rather than assuming every guide or announcement applies to your version.

- Open Settings > Software update and check for an available update. Install it if you are ready, following the on-screen instructions.
- In Settings, search for Security update or review the security-update information available on your model. The exact location can differ by software version.
- After installation, return to Settings and confirm the software version before following model-specific paths below.
Samsung’s update notice for model SM-S942W describes changes to quick-panel behavior and security and privacy features. That notice is tied to that model code, so it does not establish that the same changes are available on every S26, carrier, or region. Samsung’s support pages provide device-specific help; check the update screen on your phone for availability.

These settings are preference choices: prioritize readability, visual comfort, smooth motion, a particular look, or your preferred way to wake and navigate the phone. The Galaxy S26 family guide documents the following controls, though their placement can shift with software updates.

Brightness, dark mode, and eye comfort
- Brightness: Choose a level that is easy to read, or use adaptive brightness if you want the phone to adjust to surrounding light.
- Dark mode: Turn it on or schedule it if you prefer a darker interface. Treat this as a visual preference, not a guaranteed battery-saving setting.
- Eye comfort shield: Review its schedule and appearance if you want a warmer screen at selected times.
Motion smoothness and screen resolution
Look under Settings > Display for Motion smoothness and, where available, Screen resolution. Choose based on how the screen looks and feels to you and your own display or battery priorities. The available guide does not establish a fixed battery-life gain for a particular choice.
Timeout and wake gestures
Set Screen timeout to a duration that balances convenience with how long you want the display to remain on when idle. If you like quick access, review gestures such as lift-to-wake or double-tap screen controls in Settings. Keep only the gestures you find useful.

Privacy Display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra
Privacy Display is exclusive to the S26 Ultra; the base S26 and S26+ do not have this setting. On the Ultra, Samsung documents the path Settings > Display > Privacy display. You can choose activation conditions and maximum privacy protection. Samsung Global Newsroom describes it as “a display-integrated layer designed to limit side viewing while maintaining clarity and brightness.” Try it in the situations where you need reduced side-angle visibility, and decide whether that added privacy suits your viewing experience. 3. Review privacy, security, and personal-data controls
Use your phone’s Settings > Security and privacy area to inspect the controls available on your model. Samsung lists Auto Blocker, Theft Protection, Private Sharing, and Secure Wi-Fi among its security and privacy tools. Review what each does and enable or configure the options that fit your needs; no single control eliminates every risk.

Check permissions and personalization
Review which apps can access sensitive permissions such as location, camera, and microphone, and remove access that no longer makes sense to you. Samsung says the Galaxy S26’s Personal Data Engine learns preferences on device. If you are unsure about AI or personalization features, inspect their settings and decide whether their convenience is worth the associated data access for your use.
Samsung describes Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection as isolating data within individual apps and Knox Vault as protecting credentials and biometrics in a hardware environment. These are Samsung’s descriptions of its protections, not a guarantee against all threats. Samsung’s SM-S942W update notice also describes location-access indicators and AI alerts about unnecessary permission access; whether you see those features depends on your model and software rollout. 4. Adjust battery settings without chasing unsupported promises
Review Battery protection and the battery-status information available in Settings if you want to manage charging or check the phone’s reported condition. Samsung support also provides battery and charging help. Pick options that fit how and when you charge; the available product information does not establish a reliable, quantified battery-life gain from a specific setting.
Avoid disabling broad system features just because a generic setup list calls them unnecessary. If a feature is useful to you, keep it on and assess your own experience before changing it.
5. Choose camera settings for the photos and videos you make
Samsung support has dedicated Galaxy S26 camera-setting help, but the available sources do not establish one camera-menu path that applies across all three models and software versions. Open the Camera app and its settings on your phone, then choose options around your actual use: everyday photos, low-light scenes, document capture, or video.
Balance video detail against storage and sharing
Samsung Business Insights says Galaxy S26-series video capture can reach 8K. Higher-resolution recording may suit footage you intend to preserve or work with at high detail, but it also creates larger files than lower-resolution choices, which can affect storage and sharing workflows. Choose the resolution and frame-rate options available on your model with those trade-offs in mind; 8K is not automatically the best setting for every clip.
Use low-light and editing features selectively
Samsung highlights Nightography and AI image-editing features for the S26 family. Try the camera options that match your subject and the way you edit or share images. Check results and file sizes in your own workflow rather than assuming a feature or higher setting improves every shot.
