That difference affects compatibility, speed, controls and—especially—whether progress can be saved. There is no universal answer for every title: behavior depends on the game, emulator, browser, device and how the player handles storage.
How do browser-based games run?
A browser is both a runtime—the environment that executes an application—and a constrained environment with rules about access to hardware, networking and storage. “Runs in a browser” therefore describes where a game runs, not how it was made or how closely it will match another version.

Web-native games
A web-native game is built or adapted for browser technologies such as JavaScript, HTML and WebAssembly. Ren’Py, for example, offers a web build compiled to WebAssembly so that much of its engine runs in the browser. Its web version has limits: it does not support the engine’s multithreading functions or arbitrary networking, and browser-supported media formats and features constrain playback. Ren’Py also notes that loading images can cause frame-rate glitches because its web port cannot use the background preloading available to desktop and mobile versions. Older games running in an emulator
An emulator recreates some or all of another computer or console’s behavior in software. A browser player may use an emulator adapted to web APIs, rather than a game rewritten as a web-native title. The Internet Archive’s Internet Arcade, for example, uses JSMESS, a JavaScript port of MESS/MAME; its help page says that no separate plugin is needed. RomM describes a different setup in which EmulatorJS runs RetroArch cores compiled to WebAssembly using Emscripten. These are examples, not a single standard architecture used by all browser games.

Emulation adds work: the browser must run the game and simulate the target system. The browser sandbox can also limit access to peripherals, complex hardware and networking. A 2025 overview from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) observes that older systems often run well in the browser-emulation contexts it discusses, while more recent systems can struggle. That is a broad observation, not a guarantee for a particular game or device. See CLIR’s overview of browser-based emulation.
Why do speed and compatibility vary?
Performance depends on the game’s workload, the emulator or engine, the browser’s supported features, the device’s CPU, GPU and memory, and what else is using those resources. A demanding emulator core can be much harder to run than a lightweight web-native game. RomM’s EmulatorJS guide specifically warns that older or less powerful devices may struggle with demanding Dreamcast, Saturn and PSP cores.

Compatibility is similarly specific. A browser may lack a feature a game expects, or the emulator may not reproduce the target hardware well enough for that title. Ren’Py’s current documentation targets recent evergreen versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, while warning that required modern browser features can be blocked or disabled. This is guidance for Ren’Py’s web port, not a universal browser-game compatibility list. RomM’s documentation says its PSP core requires SharedArrayBuffer in a secure, cross-origin-isolated context, so that particular integration needs HTTPS. Other browser emulators may have different requirements.

Start with the player’s own help page: its advice is more relevant than a general browser fix. The Internet Archive’s 2018 support pages offer useful examples of issues a browser emulator can encounter, but describe that service at the time of publication rather than every current browser game.

If it runs too slowly or fails to start
- Close other demanding tabs or applications, then reload the game. CPU load and limited memory can affect local browser execution.
- Use a current browser version and check that JavaScript is enabled. The Internet Archive’s 2018 Internet Arcade help page lists disabled JavaScript, JavaScript blockers, low memory or disk space, and outdated browsers among possible causes of failure or poor operation.
- If the player offers a different emulator core or quality setting, consult its documentation before changing it. A less demanding option may help, but changing cores can affect save-state compatibility.
- For a Ren’Py web game, check that the browser is recent and supports the features the game requires. Image loading may cause temporary frame-rate glitches in that web port.
The Internet Archive’s 2018 MS-DOS emulation help page describes its emulator as CPU-intensive, notes that older browsers can differ substantially in speed, and says some compatibility problems can make a program unusually slow. It also warns that some older games can run too fast because they rely on timing loops. These are service-specific examples, not proof that a particular slowdown or speed-up has one universal cause. The Internet Arcade page also describes sound distortion under load in that historical implementation.
If it runs too fast
Look for a speed, frame-skip or timing option in the player’s controls or help. If there is none, try a different browser or device and check the game’s compatibility guidance. A title that relies on timing loops may behave differently from one that synchronizes to a modern clock; simply changing graphics quality may not address the cause.

How do browser games save progress?
“Save” can mean several different things. An in-game save is created through the game’s own save system. A save state captures the emulator or runtime at a particular moment, much like a snapshot of a running machine. A player might also keep data in the browser or synchronize it to a server. Those approaches are not interchangeable, and a browser game may provide none of them.
Check the player before you start
Find the game’s save instructions before investing time. Check whether it supports in-game saves, downloading or exporting a save, browser-local storage, or server synchronization. Do not assume that a visible save icon means progress will survive a refresh, browser storage cleanup or a move to another device.

Export or sync when available
Ren’Py’s web port provides options to import and export save games and persistent data. Its export produces a downloadable ZIP that can be backed up or imported into another browser or a desktop version of the game. RomM’s EmulatorJS integration prompts users to select an existing save or state and writes in-emulator saves and states back to the server. These are specific implementations; other players may handle progress differently.
Keep a backup and the same emulator core
When a player allows downloads or exports, keep a copy somewhere outside the browser. RomM’s documentation warns that save states can become unloadable after switching emulator cores, so keep the same core when resuming a state in that system. In general, do not rely on browser cache or an unsynced state as your only copy.
Some players do not preserve progress
The Internet Archive’s 2018 MS-DOS emulation help page says that its player then had no way to save a game. CLIR’s 2025 overview likewise notes that many browser emulators do not preserve state or storage across refresh, and describes Internet Archive collections as not retaining information across sessions. Those statements describe the cited services and contexts; verify the current player’s instructions rather than assuming all browser emulation works the same way.

A controller is optional, not a requirement. Support depends on the game and player exposing compatible input, and the available button mapping can vary by platform. webЯcade documents Bluetooth and USB gamepad support across its listed device families and advises users to check the specific application’s keyboard or gamepad mappings and platform guide. A USB or Bluetooth controller will only help if the title accepts that input; a keyboard-only game may not use one at all. See webЯcade’s documentation.
