If Phasmophobia voice chat is not working, first check which microphone the game is using and whether the problem is teammate chat or in-game voice recognition. On PC, Kinetic Games says the default microphone assigned on the PC should match the microphone specified in Windows settings. On console, reconnect a compatible microphone and set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice. If those checks do not help, the cause may be a game or platform issue rather than your setup.
First, identify what is not working
Phasmophobia’s teammate voice chat and its voice recognition are related but distinct. Voice chat lets players talk to one another; voice recognition interprets spoken input for game mechanics such as the Spirit Box and cursed possessions. A microphone that works for one function may not resolve a problem with the other.

- Several players or platforms are affected: a game-side issue is possible, especially if the problem began after an update.
Note whether the issue affects one player or everyone, which platform you use, and whether it started after an update. These details help distinguish a local setup problem from a wider issue.

Match the Windows default microphone
For the PC Voice setting, Kinetic Games’ Phasmophobia Hotfix v0.17.1.5 notes advise checking that the default microphone assigned on the PC matches the microphone specified in Windows settings.

- In Windows sound settings, select the microphone you intend to use as the default input device.
- Check that the microphone shown in Windows is the same one you expect Phasmophobia to use.
- Return to the game and test the affected function again.
If voice recognition stopped responding after you changed from Voice to System, select the mode you intend to use again and restart or re-enter the game as a diagnostic step. Kinetic Games later documented a fix for recognition failing after that mode switch in its v0.18.0.0 patch notes. Restarting or re-entering is troubleshooting advice, not a step specified in those notes.
Fix microphone and voice settings on Xbox
Kinetic Games’ console voice-recognition guide says Xbox players can connect a compatible headset through the controller’s headset jack or wirelessly when supported. In the journal’s game options, set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice.

If the microphone disconnects while you are playing, the game defaults to TEXT until the microphone is reconnected. Reconnect it, then check the voice mode and test again.
Fix microphone and voice settings on PlayStation or PS VR2
The same Kinetic Games guide says PS5 players can use the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone or another supported headset connected to the console. PS VR2 players can use the headset’s built-in microphone. Set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice in the journal’s game options.

If spoken input is not recognized, check that the intended microphone is connected and selected at the console level. If the device is not available to the console, changing the in-game mode alone will not make it work.
Check whether an update or known issue is involved
A correctly configured microphone does not rule out a Phasmophobia bug. Kinetic Games’ v0.17.1.4 patch notes recorded a period when players across platforms were experiencing voice-recognition and voice-chat issues and said a fix was being investigated. Later notes documented specific fixes: a Steam voice-recognition issue in v0.17.1.5 and the Voice-to-System switching issue in v0.18.0.0. Those fixes apply to the issues described in those updates; they do not establish that every current voice problem is fixed.

The v0.17.1.4 notes also warned that Windows 7/8 or another outdated Windows installation might need Windows Update and a restart after a security-certificate update on the game’s voice servers. This is a version-specific warning, not a universal requirement for current Windows installations.

Kinetic Games’ v0.19.0.2 notes also describe a fix for a specific multiplayer muffled-audio interaction involving a dropped Parabolic Microphone. That is a distinct, situation-specific audio issue; it does not establish that every muffled-chat problem has the same cause.

When to try different microphone hardware
Do free connection and settings checks before buying anything. If your current microphone is missing, incompatible with your platform, or faulty, a compatible headset may be an option. Check compatibility with your exact console or PC, whether its wired or wireless connection is supported, and whether an existing built-in microphone will work. Kinetic Games’ console guide describes connection options but does not endorse a particular headset model. Buying new hardware is not a fix for a game-side defect.
Contact Phasmophobia support if the problem remains
If the microphone and mode checks do not solve the issue, use the Kinetic Games Support Centre. Include details that can help distinguish a device problem from a game issue:
